Golden Knights vs. Utah Mammoth Game 4 Prediction: Can Vegas Survive or Will History Keep Being Made in Salt Lake City?

Utah leads the series 2-1 and has been one of the most surprising playoff stories in recent NHL history. Game 4 is a pivotal moment for both franchises tonight at the Delta Center.

The Utah Mammoth are making history in their first-ever NHL playoff appearance, and they are not done yet. After dropping Game 1 to the Vegas Golden Knights, Utah has rattled off two straight wins to take a 2-1 series lead heading into Game 4 at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City. The Golden Knights, Pacific Division champions in their eighth playoff appearance in nine seasons, are now on upset alert in a series they were expected to control.

What has made this series so compelling is how Utah has won. The Mammoth took Game 3 by a score of 4-2 despite being outshot 32-12 — making them only the eighth team since 1974 to win a playoff game with 12 or fewer shots on goal. That is not luck. That is elite goaltending, defensive structure, and finishing ability in key moments. Vegas has to be alarmed, because the process that generated their shots in Game 3 is not going to dramatically change overnight.

The Odds Say Vegas, But Utah Has Home Ice

Vegas comes into Game 4 as favorites, which makes sense given their playoff pedigree and the fact that this is their eighth postseason in nine years. But Utah holds home ice advantage tonight at the Delta Center, and that crowd has been electric for this franchise’s first-ever playoff run. The Mammoth won the regular season series against Vegas convincingly, taking two games by scores of 5-1 and 4-0. The line reflects respect for the Golden Knights, but smart bettors are paying close attention to the value on Utah at home.

Carter Hart vs. Karel Vejmelka: The Goaltending Storyline

Jack Eichel has been the engine of the Vegas offense all season, finishing with 90 points (27 goals, 63 assists) in the regular year, and Mitch Marner added 80 points to give the Golden Knights one of the more dangerous top-six forward groups in the Western Conference. Mark Stone has also contributed in this series with 2 goals and an assist. Vegas operates a lethal power play at 24.6%, and if Utah gives them opportunities, they can erase momentum in a hurry.

But Carter Hart had a rough Game 3. He allowed 4 goals on just 12 shots, which is an unsustainable performance for a goaltender who had been stellar — posting a 1.66 GAA and .930 save percentage over his last eight starts including the playoffs. One bad game does not erase that track record, and Vegas will need Hart to return to that elite form to survive this series. If he does, the Golden Knights have enough offensive firepower to win this game and tie the series at two games apiece.

On the other side, Karel Vejmelka has been exceptional for Utah in the playoffs. His 2.36 GAA and .916 save percentage in the postseason have been the backbone of this Mammoth run. Utah’s offense is built around Clayton Keller, who finished the regular season with 88 points (26 goals, 62 assists), and Nick Schmaltz, who scored 33 goals. Dylan Guenther (40 goals) gives Utah a genuine sniper, and Lawson Crouse was physical and impactful with 2 goals in Game 3 alone. MacKenzie Weegar has been a surprise offensive contributor from the blue line with 2 goals and an assist in this series.

The key storyline entering Game 4 is special teams. Utah’s coach acknowledged that the Mammoth lost the special teams battle through the first three games of this series, which is notable given that Utah only runs a 16.7% power play compared to Vegas’s 24.6%. If Vegas gets their power play humming and Utah does not generate enough even-strength offense to compensate, the Golden Knights have a path back into this series. Utah’s strength is 5-on-5 play — they ranked fifth in the NHL with 185 even-strength goals this season — and maintaining that advantage is critical tonight.

Prediction and Best Bet

Utah has earned the right to be taken seriously, and the Delta Center crowd will be raucous for what is the biggest game in franchise history. Vejmelka has been outstanding, the Utah offense has found ways to score in key moments, and the Mammoth clearly believe they can win this series. That said, Vegas is a battle-tested playoff team with elite offensive weapons and a goaltender who, when healthy and sharp, is among the best in the game. Expect Hart to bounce back after his rough Game 3 outing, and for Eichel and company to generate far more than 12 shots on goal.

  • Prediction: Vegas Golden Knights 4, Utah Mammoth 2
  • Best Bet: Vegas Golden Knights moneyline

Vegas has too much playoff experience and too many high-end offensive weapons to drop three in a row in this series. Hart gets right, Eichel and Marner take over, and the Golden Knights avoid falling into a 3-1 hole. Still, if Utah manages to win Game 4, all bets are off — this Mammoth team has already proven they belong on this stage.
