Tarik Skubal is walking back into the only clubhouse he’s ever known — except this time he’s wearing Dodgers blue and trying to beat the guys who used to be his teammates.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Dodgers -1.5
  • Why: Skubal’s stuff plus a Detroit lineup that’s lost eight of its last ten is a tough combination to bet against
  • The number to watch: Skubal’s 26.4% K-BB rate, more than double Drew Anderson’s 17.5%

Friday night at Comerica Park is the kind of storyline baseball can’t script any better. Less than a month after the Tigers sent their two-time reigning AL Cy Young winner to Los Angeles ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline, Skubal takes the mound against the only organization he’d ever pitched for, in the same ballpark where he threw his 1,000th career strikeout in his Detroit finale. The Dodgers roll in at 80-54 and cruising toward another deep October run. The Tigers, meanwhile, are 62-71 and have dropped eight of their last 10, a brutal stretch that’s turned what once looked like a competitive AL Central club into a team playing out the string.

Detroit did get something for Skubal — pitching prospect River Ryan among the return — but the Tigers are 9-12 since making the trade, while the Dodgers have gotten immediate results, with Skubal going 1-2 with a 3.38 ERA in four Los Angeles starts. He’s coming off his best outing yet in blue: 11 strikeouts over seven innings in a win over Pittsburgh last weekend.

What the Market Is Saying About Detroit’s Home Underdogs

Books have the Dodgers as heavy road favorites, and the number reflects both a talent gap and a Tigers offense that’s been ice-cold during their slide. Los Angeles opened around -215 on the MLB odds boards and has held steady near there, with the run line sitting at -1.5 for the Dodgers and the total set at 7.5. Detroit’s price of roughly +180 makes them a live dog on paper, but sportsbooks clearly aren’t buying a Tigers lineup that’s produced one of the league’s lower on-base numbers over the last two weeks. There’s some value shading toward the under if Skubal’s control holds up, since he’s walked only 21 batters across 120.2 innings this season.

Detroit’s Lineup Is Banged Up at the Worst Time

The Tigers have been without Riley Greene since Aug. 11 with a hamstring strain, and their outfield is thin behind him — Parker Meadows and Matt Vierling are both out too, leaving Detroit patching together outfield combinations on the fly. Kerry Carpenter has also been sidelined since mid-August. That’s a lot of offensive punch missing from a lineup that was already grinding through a 2-8 slide entering the weekend. Gleyber Torres, hitting .258 with 8 homers and a .363 OBP, is one of the few consistent bats Detroit has left to lean on, and second baseman Kevin McGonigle has quietly been a bright spot at .278 with 14 homers in his first extended big-league look.

On the other side, the Dodgers have their own injury list — Andy Pages, Edwin Díaz, Justin Wrobleski and Roki Sasaki are all out — but Los Angeles has enough star power in the lineup to absorb it. Shohei Ohtani is hitting .288 with 30 home runs and an OPS pushing .935, Freddie Freeman is at .301 with 15 homers, and Mookie Betts has come alive with 16 homers of his own despite a modest .237 average. That top of the order alone creates more consistent pressure than anything Detroit can counter with right now.

Skubal owns a 26.4% strikeout-minus-walk rate this season, nearly nine points better than Anderson’s 17.5%, and that gap tends to be the difference-maker in low-scoring, well-pitched games.

Anderson has actually pitched better than his 4-5 record suggests in stretches, but a 4.09 ERA and 1.29 WHIP against a Dodgers lineup this deep is a tall ask. Detroit’s staff has needed length from its rotation just to keep games manageable, and a shaky bullpen behind him doesn’t offer much of a safety net if Anderson runs into trouble early.

Beyond the pitching matchup, Friday carries real emotional weight for Skubal himself. He called the return “emotional” and admitted he’s not sure how it’ll feel walking out to that mound as the visiting starter. Tigers hitters like Spencer Torkelson and Colt Keith know his tendencies from years in the same clubhouse, which could theoretically help Detroit’s approach at the plate — but familiarity only goes so far against a pitcher throwing this well right now.

Prediction and Best Bet

The Dodgers have the better roster, the hotter trajectory, and the starting pitcher with the sharper numbers, even accounting for whatever nerves come with Skubal’s homecoming. Detroit’s banged-up lineup and eight-losses-in-ten stretch make this a tough spot to trust the Tigers to keep it within a run.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Dodgers 5, Tigers 2
  2. Best Bet: Dodgers -1.5

Skubal’s control and swing-and-miss stuff against a compromised Detroit lineup is enough to lean on the Dodgers covering, even on the road in front of a charged-up Comerica Park crowd.
