The Minnesota Lynx have the best record in basketball and a double-digit-point margin most nights, but the Dallas Wings are the one team that’s given them fits this season — even if the scoreboard hasn’t shown it lately.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Minnesota Lynx -6.5
  • Why: Dallas is banged up on the wing and walking into a building where Minnesota is 13-2
  • The number to watch: Napheesa Collier’s 19.3 points per game since returning from her ankle injury

Minnesota (26-7) sits comfortably atop the Western Conference and the entire WNBA standings, riding the league’s best point differential behind a defense that’s held opponents to 84 points a night. Dallas (19-13) is fighting to hold onto the fourth seed out West, and this trip to Target Center comes in the middle of a rough stretch — the Wings have dropped four of their last five, including an 18-point beatdown at the hands of Golden State just two days before tip-off.

Minnesota’s Home-Court Math Is Brutal for Visitors

The Lynx have been essentially unbeatable at Target Center this season, and the number reflects it: this line opened with Minnesota favored by a touchdown and change, and it hasn’t moved much since. Minnesota is priced around -260 on the moneyline with Dallas getting +205 to +190 depending on the book, and the total sits near 179.5 points. For bettors tracking live betting odds across the league, this is one of the more lopsided lines on the WNBA board this weekend.

That number makes sense given the Lynx just beat Las Vegas — the No. 3 seed in the West — by 11 points on Saturday, and they’ve won nine of their last ten. Books have priced this as a comfortable Minnesota win, and nothing in the recent form disagrees with that read.

Recent Form

The gap between these two teams’ trajectories right now is stark — one is peaking, the other is scuffling at the worst possible time.

Bueckers Is Fighting Uphill Without Her Wing Depth

Paige Bueckers has been Dallas’s engine all year, averaging 20.0 points and 5.7 assists a night, and she’ll need a monster performance just to keep this one competitive. The problem is who’s missing around her. Alysha Clark is out with a back injury, Costanza Verona is out for personal reasons, and Azzi Fudd — Dallas’s leading source of perimeter defense and a key secondary scorer — is questionable with a knee issue that had her day-to-day heading into Sunday. That’s a significant chunk of the Wings’ wing rotation compromised against a Minnesota roster that just doesn’t have a lot of soft spots to exploit right now.

On the other side, Napheesa Collier has been playing her way back into peak form since returning from an ankle injury, and it’s showing up on both ends. She dropped 22 points, three blocks and a season-high five 3-pointers in Saturday’s win over Las Vegas, and over her last six games she’s averaging 19.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 3.7 assists. Olivia Miles has emerged as a legitimate second option too, having dropped 26 points in that same win over Las Vegas.

That two-headed scoring punch matters more than it might look on paper, because it means Minnesota isn’t relying on one player to have a big night for this to go the way the number suggests. If Dallas keys its defense on Collier, Miles has already shown she can carry stretches on her own, and vice versa. That kind of balance is exactly what a shorthanded Dallas wing rotation struggles to account for over 40 minutes.

Minnesota is 13-2 at Target Center this season.

That home number is the whole ballgame here. Dallas has actually been a respectable road team, sitting at 10-7 away from home, but the Wings haven’t faced anything close to the defensive machine Minnesota rolls out on its own floor, where the Lynx are allowing well under their season scoring average to visitors. Dallas is 5-5 in its last ten games and dealing with real absences up front; Minnesota is rolling with its best player heating up again at exactly the right time.

The head-to-head history this season backs up the gap too — Minnesota beat Dallas 100-76 back in June, and nothing about either roster’s trajectory since then suggests that gap has closed. If anything, the trend lines have moved apart. Minnesota has only gotten healthier and deeper as the summer’s gone on, while Dallas has quietly lost pieces off a rotation that was already thin behind Bueckers.

Jessica Shepard has been a steady presence on the boards for Dallas, leading the Wings in rebounding, and Arike Ogunbowale remains a threat to get hot from anywhere on the floor. But asking that group to slow down Collier and Miles without Clark or Fudd at full strength is a lot to ask on the road, especially in a building where Minnesota has been nearly unbeatable.

Prediction and Best Bet

Dallas can hang around for stretches behind Bueckers, but a shorthanded wing rotation on the road against the league’s top defense is a tough combination to overcome. Minnesota’s size, depth and home-court dominance should be enough to cover comfortably even with a short rest window built into the schedule.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Minnesota 92, Dallas 81
  2. Best Bet: Minnesota Lynx -6.5

The Lynx have been the league’s most reliable cover at home all season, and Dallas’s injury report gives them one more reason to trust the number here.
