Cubs vs. Cardinals Prediction: Chicago Looks to Cool Off St. Louis’s Bats in Series Finale

The Cubs are clinging to a playoff spot in a stacked NL Central, and the Cardinals — six games under .500 and fading into irrelevance — are exactly the kind of team a contender is supposed to handle down the stretch.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Chicago Cubs -1.5
  • Why: Shota Imanaga gives Chicago a clear starting pitching edge, and St. Louis has been one of the league’s coldest offenses over the last two weeks
  • The number to watch: Cardinals are hitting just .217 as a team over their last 10 games

Chicago sits second in the NL Central at 61-47, six games back of Milwaukee but still very much alive in the wild card picture. St. Louis, meanwhile, is 54-54 and fourth in the division, 13 games out with little left to play for beyond spoiler duty. The Cubs took the first three games of this series, and Thursday afternoon at Busch Stadium is the finale before both clubs turn the page.

This isn’t a trap game on paper, but the Cardinals have won plenty of ugly ones this season, and Chicago’s bullpen — gutted by injuries — makes even a modest Cardinals rally more dangerous than the standings suggest.

What the Betting Markets Are Saying

The board opened close, but it’s shifted toward Chicago as first pitch approaches. FanDuel has the Cubs as road favorites at -1.5 (+172) with St. Louis getting the extra run at -210, while the moneyline sits at Cardinals -120 and Cubs +102 — a split line that reflects how tight this pitching matchup actually is on paper even with the Cubs favored on the run line. The total is set at 8.5, with -110 on both sides. Dimers’ model has it almost dead even, projecting the Cubs at 49.4% to win, which lines up with a game the sportsbooks clearly view as closer than the standings would imply.

Imanaga’s Edge and a Cold Cardinals Lineup

Shota Imanaga gets the ball for Chicago and enters at 7-8 with a 3.72 ERA, 113 strikeouts against just 29 walks in 121 innings — a 1.10 WHIP that ranks among the better marks in a rotation that’s otherwise been hit hard by injuries. St. Louis counters with Andre Pallante, who’s actually been effective in his own right at 11-6 with a 3.77 ERA, though his 83 strikeouts and 1.21 WHIP over 112.1 innings suggest more contact-management than swing-and-miss stuff.

Where this tilts toward Chicago is the lineup trend. St. Louis is hitting just .217 as a team over its last 10 games with only 3 home runs, a brutal stretch that includes a 3-7 record in that span. Chicago, by contrast, is 6-4 over the same window, hitting .273 with 11 homers and a 3.26 ERA from the pitching staff. Pete Crow-Armstrong has been Chicago’s engine all year at .296 with 21 home runs and 52 RBI, while Nico Hoerner (.324) and Dansby Swanson (16 homers, 58 RBI) give the Cubs multiple ways to manufacture runs even against a Cardinals staff that’s better than its record.

The Cardinals have hit .217 as a team over their last 10 games — the single clearest red flag in this matchup.

That kind of offensive slump is hard to shake in a single afternoon, especially against a starter locating like Imanaga has been. Jordan Walker remains St. Louis’s one consistent offensive threat, hitting around .280 with double-digit home runs and nearly 80 RBI, but a lineup can’t lean on one bat to erase a two-week cold spell.

Chicago’s bullpen is thin. That’s the honest counterpoint here — with Daniel Palencia, Ben Brown, Phil Maton, Ethan Roberts, and Hoby Milner all out, plus season-ending injuries to arms like Cade Horton and Porter Hodge, the Cubs are leaning on a shorter relief corps than they’d like in a tight game. If Imanaga doesn’t go deep, that late-inning math gets uncomfortable fast.

Prediction and Best Bet

Chicago’s rotation edge and St. Louis’s offensive slump point toward a Cubs win, even on the road in a division series finale that doesn’t carry much juice for either side in the standings. The safer number is the run line rather than the moneyline gap.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Chicago Cubs 5, St. Louis Cardinals 2
  2. Best Bet: Cubs -1.5 on the run line

Imanaga’s control and a cold Cardinals lineup make this a good spot to back Chicago covering rather than just picking the moneyline winner.
