The Dodgers have won five straight and are rolling toward October, but Yoshinobu Yamamoto just got hit around by the Cardinals and needs to prove that outing was a blip before this Reds series wraps up.
Quick take:
- Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers moneyline
- Why: Yamamoto’s peripherals are still elite and Rhett Lowder has a 5.43 ERA against a lineup that’s mashing right now
- The number to watch: Lowder has allowed 16 home runs in 116 innings this season
Cincinnati (69-75) is playing out the string, sitting 8.5 games back in the NL Wild Card race with a magic number that’s already gone red. There’s still pride on the line for a young core trying to figure out who sticks around next year, but the postseason math stopped mattering for this club weeks ago. Los Angeles (87-57) has the opposite problem entirely — the Dodgers are 7-3 in their last 10, riding a five-game winning streak, and locked into the top NL Wild Card seed while they wait to see if they can catch Milwaukee for the NL West crown. This is the final game of a three-game set at Dodger Stadium, and LA has already taken the first two, outscoring Cincinnati in both.
Books have this one about as close to a lock as MLB odds get on a given night, with the Dodgers moneyline sitting in the -295 to -322 range depending on the book and Cincinnati getting plus-money as the road underdog on both the line and the run line. Check the latest MLB odds before first pitch since these numbers move throughout the day. That’s not just about the standings — it’s about the pitching matchup. Yamamoto is 12-8 with a 2.67 ERA and 161 strikeouts across 165 innings, numbers that put him firmly in the NL Cy Young conversation, while Lowder is working through a rough sophomore transition at 6-9 with a 5.43 ERA.
| Wednesday, September 9 at 10:11 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Cincinnati Reds | +2 (-118) | +240 | O 8.5 (-110) |
| Los Angeles Dodgers | -2 (-104) | -278 | U 8.5 (-110) |
Both teams are trending in believable directions right now — Cincinnati’s playing better baseball than its record suggests of late, but the Dodgers are peaking at the best possible time.

Lowder’s season-long ERA is skewed by a stretch that got him briefly demoted to the bullpen, but even since returning to the rotation on July 24, he’s posted a 4.91 ERA over eight starts — better, not good. His 47 walks against 90 strikeouts in 116 innings point to a command issue that a lineup with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Teoscar Hernandez will happily punish. Ohtani has 30 home runs on the year and remains the most dangerous hitter in baseball with a bat in his hands, and Hernandez has been quietly destructive in the middle of this order all series.
On the other side, Yamamoto’s 0.90 WHIP is the number that actually matters more than his ERA blip against St. Louis. He’s allowed just 110 hits and 38 walks across 165 innings — elite traffic control that tends to bounce back after one shaky start rather than snowball into a slump. His 161 strikeouts already rank among the best marks by any Dodgers starter in recent seasons, and a rotation that also features Tarik Skubal and Chase Burns has given Los Angeles a top-heavy strength few contenders can match down the stretch. Tyler Stephenson has been one of the lone bright spots for Cincinnati’s lineup this season, and he’ll need a big night behind the plate and at it if the Reds want to avoid a series sweep.
Lowder has allowed 16 home runs in just 116 innings this season — nearly identical to Yamamoto’s 18 in 165, despite throwing 49 fewer frames.
That home run rate is the crux of this game. A Dodgers lineup that’s already gone deep on Lowder-type command issues all year figures to find at least one mistake to punish, and in a ballpark that’s forgiving to fly balls, that’s often enough. Cincinnati’s bullpen has also been stretched thin without Hunter Greene, who remains on the 60-day IL, leaving less margin for error if Lowder doesn’t get through five or six innings clean. Add in Spencer Steer’s absence with a wrist injury and this is a Reds roster missing real thump in the middle of the order, even against a Dodgers starter who’s had one shaky outing in an otherwise dominant season.
The Dodgers have the better pitcher, the better lineup, and the moment — five straight wins with October positioning on the line — while Cincinnati is playing out a lost season on the road. There’s little reason to expect the script to flip in the finale.
The pick:
Yamamoto’s one bad start against St. Louis looks like an outlier, not a trend, and that alone should be enough to close this series out in LA’s favor.
