The Braves have already wrapped up the NL East, but that hasn’t slowed them down one bit against a Reds team playing out the string.
Quick take:
- Pick: Braves -1.5
- Why: Atlanta’s lineup is rolling, Cincinnati’s is in freefall, and the Reds are trotting out a shaky bullpen behind a struggling starter
- The number to watch: Reds are 3-7 over their last 10 games with a -41 run differential in that span
Cincinnati (72-84) heads to Truist Park to open a three-game set against Atlanta (92-64) already eliminated from playoff contention, while the division-champion Braves are riding a three-game winning streak and playing their best baseball of the second half. Atlanta has won seven of its last 10 and gone 51-27 at home this season, a mark that speaks to just how comfortable this roster looks in front of its own crowd.
This is the fourth of six meetings between these clubs this season, and Atlanta has taken two of the first three, including an 8-3 blowout back in May. The Braves clinched the division over the weekend in Houston and now get to play the role of measuring stick against a Reds club with nothing but pride left to play for in the final week and a half of the regular season.
Why the Number Looks Rich for Cincinnati
Atlanta opened as roughly a -184 favorite on the moneyline and the number has crept as high as -194 in some markets, with the Reds sitting at +154 to +158. The run line has the Braves at -1.5 (+109 to +114) and Cincinnati at +1.5 (-131 to -137), while the total sits at 9.5, with the over drawing slightly better value than the under in most books.
The market isn’t wrong to lean this heavily on Atlanta. JR Ritchie gets the ball for the Braves at 1-3 with a 5.03 ERA, but his strikeout rate (58 punchouts in 62.2 innings) and a lineup that’s scored 722 runs this season give him a real cushion. Brandon Williamson takes the mound for Cincinnati at 4-4 with a 5.56 ERA and a bloated 1.53 WHIP, and he’s walked 27 batters in fewer than 44 innings — control issues that could get exposed against a Braves order that doesn’t chase.

The gap between these two teams’ trajectories right now couldn’t be starker — one club is peaking, the other is bottoming out.

Olson and De La Cruz Headline a Lopsided Power Matchup
Matt Olson has quietly put together a monster season for Atlanta, sitting on 40 home runs while slugging .506, and he’s flanked by Ronald Acuna Jr. (.260/.352/.463, 20 homers) and Michael Harris II, who’s hitting .289 with a .486 slugging mark and playing some of the best center-field defense in the league down the stretch. Ozzie Albies has settled in at .242/.298/.402 with 22 home runs, giving Atlanta thump from the top to the bottom of the order.
Cincinnati’s answer is Elly De La Cruz, who’s been the one consistent bright spot in an otherwise miserable stretch — a .285 average with 28 home runs, 74 RBIs and a .515 slugging percentage that would look right at home in a much better lineup. Sal Stewart has chipped in 32 homers of his own, but beyond those two the Reds’ offense has cratered, batting just .233 as a team over their last 10 games with a 3.1 runs-per-game average.
Cincinnati has been outscored 7.2 to 3.1 runs per game over its last 10 outings.
That kind of run-differential collapse doesn’t happen against good competition without consequences, and Atlanta is about as good as it gets right now. The Braves’ bullpen has taken some hits — Robert Suarez, Joe Jimenez and Reynaldo Lopez are all out — but the rotation and lineup have been deep enough to cover for it, evidenced by consecutive series wins over Houston to close the road trip.
Cincinnati simply doesn’t have the pitching depth to slow this down. Their own bullpen has been torched during the losing stretch, most glaringly in a 20-0 shutout loss to Milwaukee earlier this month, and Williamson’s command issues make him a candidate to get into trouble early against a patient Atlanta lineup that racks up walks and works deep counts.
Prediction and Best Bet
Atlanta’s combination of home-field comfort, a clinched division with nothing to lose, and a Reds team in complete freefall points to a comfortable Braves win. Look for Olson and Harris to do damage against a Williamson outing that struggles to get through five innings.
The pick:
- Prediction: Atlanta Braves 6, Cincinnati Reds 2
- Best Bet: Braves -1.5
With Cincinnati banged up offensively and playing out the string, the Braves’ run differential edge and home-field dominance make the run line the smarter play over a straight moneyline bet at this price.
