Champions League Best Bets Tonight: Barcelona Need a Miracle, Liverpool Need Salah — Here’s Where the Value Is

Two Champions League quarterfinal second legs are on the slate today (Tuesday, April 14), both kicking off at 3:00 PM ET. Atletico Madrid hosts Barcelona at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, and Liverpool hosts PSG at Anfield. The first legs did not go particularly well for the English and Spanish attackers — Barcelona and Liverpool both trail 0-2 — but the betting angles on today’s matches are worth a close look before the first whistle.

Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona: The Aggregate Math Is Brutal, But the Match Odds Are Interesting

Barcelona are in a hole. Atletico won the first leg 2-0 at Camp Nou — a result made worse by Cubarsí’s red card, which left Barcelona down to ten men and allowed Atletico to score from a free kick. Today, Barcelona need to win by three or more goals to advance in ninety minutes, or by two goals to force extra time. Atletico, meanwhile, need only a draw or a narrow defeat to go through. The tie advancement odds reflect that reality: Atletico are around -385 to advance, Barcelona +230 to +370.

Here is where it gets interesting for bettors. Because Atletico are going to sit deep and defend, Barcelona are actually favored to WIN the match — the match odds are approximately -112 for a Barcelona victory, because the Colchoneros have no interest in attacking when a 0-0 or 1-0 loss gets them through. That creates a genuine value play: Barcelona to win the match outright. They are going to attack regardless. Lamine Yamal and the Barcelona attack are capable of scoring two or three goals anywhere in Europe, and Barcelona actually won at the Metropolitano in the Copa del Rey this season, scoring three. This match environment — with Atletico inviting pressure — suits Barcelona’s attacking game better than many neutral venues would. If you believe Barcelona can score twice, the match win and the tie advancement are both live.

Liverpool vs. PSG: Back the Goals, Not the Comeback

PSG won the first leg 2-0 at Parc des Princes in a performance where Liverpool barely had a chance. Mohamed Salah was famously kept on the bench for much of that match. Today, PSG need only avoid a three-goal swing at Anfield to advance — their series odds reflect that dominance, sitting around -909 to -575 depending on the book.

Liverpool’s odds to advance are +500 to +600, and while Anfield is as loud and intimidating as any venue in European football, asking for a 3-0 result or better is a significant task. The more actionable angle is the goals market. Liverpool over 1.5 total goals is available at around -115, and the reasoning is straightforward: PSG have conceded two or more goals in seven of their last eleven Champions League fixtures. Liverpool will throw everything at them from the first minute. Salah is expected to start. The home crowd will be pushing the pace from kickoff. A match with multiple Liverpool goals — even if PSG ultimately advance — is a reasonable expectation based on PSG’s European defensive record and Liverpool’s attacking motivation. Take the over in the goals market and let the aggregate drama play out around it.
