Atlanta’s season comes down to one swing, one pitch, one night — lose Game 4, and the Braves’ encore to 2021 ends in the same building where it once began.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers moneyline
  • Why: Atlanta is being forced to lean on a shaky, injury-riddled rotation in an elimination game against a Dodgers lineup that’s hitting on all cylinders
  • The number to watch: Freddie Freeman is 4-for-his-last-9 with 3 runs scored and a .364 series average against his former team

The Dodgers hold a 2-1 series lead and need just one more win at Truist Park to punch their ticket to a fourth straight NLCS. Los Angeles enters Wednesday riding a 3-1 win in Game 3 behind a dominant Yoshinobu Yamamoto outing, while the Braves — who finished 94-68 and topped the NL East — are suddenly staring down the same deficit that buried the 106-win 2021 Dodgers in the NLCS against this very Atlanta team.

Back then, the Braves were the ones pulling off the upset. Now they’re the ones trying to avoid becoming history’s footnote.

Why the Line Has Shifted Toward Los Angeles

Oddsmakers have the Dodgers as solid road favorites for Game 4, and the market’s confidence lines up with what’s actually happened on the field through three games. Checking the MLB odds board, Los Angeles is -144 on the moneyline, with Atlanta sitting at +120 as the home underdog — a notable number for a team that still controls its own season. The run line has the Dodgers at -1.5 (+128) and the Braves at +1.5 (-155), while the total sits at 7.5 runs (Over +104, Under -125).

Part of that gap traces directly to the mound matchup. Tyler Glasnow takes the ball for Los Angeles after a 5-2, 3.53 ERA regular season, while Atlanta turns to Tyler Mahle, who was excellent in the Wild Card round (1.29 ERA, 1.00 WHIP across seven postseason innings) but finished the regular year a modest 7-10 with a 3.99 ERA. Mahle has been better than his record most of this October, but he’s also never pitched in a win-or-go-home start at this level before.

Recent Form

The underlying numbers from this series mirror the betting market pretty closely — Los Angeles has simply been the sharper team when it matters, even in the one game they lost.

Atlanta’s Lineup Is Fighting Through More Than Just Elimination Pressure

Ronald Acuña Jr. has been limited to DH duty since Game 3 because of a sore right knee, and he’s just 2-for-9 with a stolen base through the first three games — a far cry from the version of Acuña who makes opposing pitchers pitch around him. Michael Harris II has been the one consistent offensive engine for Atlanta, racking up nine hits already in the series, including a 3-for-5 day in Game 2 with a double and a triple. Ozzie Albies has chipped in two home runs and five RBI, but beyond Harris and Albies, the Braves haven’t generated much sustained traffic against a Dodgers pitching staff that’s missing bats when it counts.

On the other side, Freddie Freeman has quietly been the best hitter in this series against the team that drafted and developed him. He’s hitting .364 with three runs scored, and his fourth-inning home run off Chris Sale in Game 3 — paired with one from Enrique Hernández — was the difference in a tense pitchers’ duel. Max Muncy has also gone deep twice, and closer Edwin Díaz, who lost his closer’s role for stretches of the regular season, has looked sharp in his first two playoff appearances, logging his first postseason save in Game 3 with a clean ninth.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto struck out 10 Braves hitters over seven innings in Game 3, and Los Angeles has now won four of its last five games overall.

That kind of swing-and-miss stuff from the top of the rotation, plus thump up and down the lineup even with Miguel Rojas (lower back) banged up and likely unavailable, gives Los Angeles multiple ways to win on any given night. Atlanta, by contrast, needs its complementary pieces — Harris, Albies, a healthy-enough Acuña — to all show up at once just to force a Game 5, and so far in this series that hasn’t happened in the same game twice.

Chris Sale’s Game 3 was a microcosm of Atlanta’s October: a strong start (three scoreless innings) undone by one bad frame, with Freeman and Hernández connecting for back-to-back homers in the fourth. If Mahle runs into similar trouble against a Dodgers order getting contributions from both stars and role players, Atlanta’s margin for error disappears fast.

Prediction and Best Bet

The Dodgers have the pitching edge, the hotter bats, and a bullpen that’s rounding into form at exactly the right time. Atlanta still has enough firepower in Harris and Albies to make this competitive, but asking Mahle to out-duel Glasnow in a true elimination game is a tall order for a pitcher making the biggest start of his career.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Los Angeles Dodgers 5, Atlanta Braves 3
  2. Best Bet: Los Angeles Dodgers on the moneyline

Los Angeles has been the better team through three games, and Wednesday night, that gap should be enough to close out the series.
