The Red Sox have no choice now — win at Yankee Stadium or go home, and they have to do it against a Yankees team that just outscored them by double digits in the series opener.
Quick take:
- Pick: Yankees -1.5
- Why: New York’s bullpen stayed largely fresh in the Game 1 blowout, and Max Fried has dominated this matchup for years
- The number to watch: Fried’s 1.93 career regular-season ERA against Boston across seven starts
New York took Game 1 of this best-of-three AL Wild Card Series, and history is not kind to teams in Boston’s position — in best-of-three Wild Card Series play, the Game 1 winner has gone on to close out the series 18 of 20 times. The Red Sox now need Sonny Gray to be perfect at Yankee Stadium just to force a decisive Game 3.
Gray, at 36, delivered one of the best seasons of his career in his first year in Boston, posting a 2.72 ERA and a tidy 1.15 WHIP while leading the Red Sox staff with 20 quality starts. He hasn’t pitched in the postseason since a Division Series start for Minnesota back in 2023, and he’s 1-3 with a 3.26 ERA across six career playoff outings. Across town, Max Fried has quietly owned this rivalry — a 1.93 ERA against Boston over seven career regular-season starts, and he already beat the Red Sox once in this very series.
Where the Market Stands on an Elimination Game
New York opened as a modest favorite and the number has held firm, with the Yankees sitting right around -134 on the moneyline and Boston priced near +116. The run line has New York at -1.5 (+164) and Boston getting a point and a half at -200, while the total sits at 6.5. None of that screams a lopsided market — bettors clearly see this as competitive on paper, even with the desperation angle tilted toward the Red Sox. Both clubs are coming off solid regular seasons, but the way each bullpen was used in Game 1 says a lot about how Wednesday could play out.

The Bullpen Math Favors New York
The lopsided nature of Game 1 actually worked in New York’s favor from a series-management standpoint — closer David Bednar only needed 15 pitches, and while Luke Weaver, Fernando Cruz, Devin Williams and Tim Hill all saw action, none were stretched. Boston, on the other hand, is also relatively fresh out of the pen; Aroldis Chapman, Garrett Whitlock and Garrett Crochet were all held in reserve, giving Chad Tracy plenty of high-leverage options if Gray keeps this one close.
Where it gets tricky for Boston is the lineup. Roman Anthony exited Game 1 early with discomfort in the same hand/wrist that already cost him nearly four months this season, and his availability for Game 2 was uncertain. Losing your leadoff bat in an elimination game against a pitcher who’s dominated your franchise is not the position Boston wants to be in. Willson Contreras (27 home runs, .275 average, 81 RBI) and Ceddanne Rafaela (.283/.319/.442) remain the engine of this offense regardless of who else is in the lineup.
Ben Rice enters with 41 home runs and 97 RBI on the season, the kind of middle-of-the-order thump that makes New York’s lineup dangerous even when Aaron Judge isn’t the one doing the damage.
Cody Bellinger has been steady all year at .264/.338/.429, and with a right-hander like Gray on the mound, expect New York to lean into its full complement of left-handed and switch-hitting bats. The season series between these two went Boston’s way at 6-7, but that was the regular season — this is an elimination game at Yankee Stadium with the crowd fully in it.
Boston has shown it can hang around. But hanging around isn’t enough on the road in a win-or-go-home spot against a pitcher who has consistently had their number.
There’s also the crowd factor. Yankee Stadium in an elimination game is about as hostile an environment as exists in the sport, and New York’s lineup has thrived at home all year, finishing with a notably better home record than road mark. Boston’s road warriors have been resilient this season, but shutting out that kind of environment against a lefty who has their number for seven career starts is a tall order even for a desperate club.
Prediction and Best Bet
Fried’s track record against Boston, combined with a fresher Yankees bullpen and the uncertainty around Anthony’s availability, tips this toward New York closing out the series at home. Gray will keep it competitive, but the margin favors the Yankees late.
The pick:
- Prediction: New York Yankees 5, Boston Red Sox 3
- Best Bet: Yankees -1.5
Boston’s bullpen depth keeps this from getting out of hand, but New York’s lineup and matchup edge with Fried make the runline the smarter play over a straight moneyline bet.
