Nothing on the line but pride and roster order, yet the Yankees still don’t want to hand the last-place Orioles a season-ending series win at home.
Quick take:
- Pick: Yankees moneyline
- Why: New York’s lineup is deeper and rested, and Baltimore is starting a hittable arm on the road to close a lost year
- The number to watch: Ben Rice’s 41 home runs, the most productive bat on the field Sunday
The Yankees have already locked up a playoff spot and are simply playing out the string before the postseason, sitting 93-68 and comfortably in second place in the AL East. Baltimore, meanwhile, is finishing a lost campaign at 79-82, 23 games back and picking through the wreckage of a season derailed by injuries to nearly every one of its young core players.
This is the rubber game of a three-game set that’s been split so far — Baltimore stunned New York 10-2 on Friday before the Yankees answered back 6-3. New York still holds a lopsided 9-3 edge in the season series entering the finale, and with first pitch at 1:05 PM ET at Yankee Stadium, neither club has much external motivation left beyond finishing strong.
What the Market Is Saying About This Finale
Books have the Yankees as solid favorites, priced at roughly -133 to -136 with Baltimore getting around +111 to +113 as the road underdog. The total sits at 7.5 runs. That line reflects New York’s deeper lineup and home-field comfort more than any wide talent gap — these are two teams playing out fairly meaningless September baseball, and the number split isn’t dramatic.
| Sunday, September 27 at 1:05 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| Baltimore Orioles | +1.5 (-220) | +105 | O 7.5 (105) |
| New York Yankees | -1.5 (148) | -120 | U 7.5 (-128) |
Recent Form Tells Two Different Stories
Both clubs actually enter Sunday hot, just for very different reasons — New York is jockeying for playoff seeding while Baltimore is simply playing spoiler with nothing left to lose.
The Yankees are 5-5 over their last 10 games, a modest stretch, but they’re still riding a one-game winning streak and get to lean on a lineup that’s mashed all year (.409 team slugging, seventh-best in MLB). Baltimore has actually been the hotter team by record, going 6-4 in its last 10 and outscoring opponents by 13 runs in that stretch, but they dropped Friday’s finale and now carry a modest one-game losing streak into the Bronx.

Alonso’s Big Year Can’t Overcome the Injury List
Pete Alonso has been the one bright spot for Baltimore all September, and he’s finishing the year in style — he’s gone deep 11 times in 23 games this month alone, sitting at 43 home runs, 113 RBI, and a .267/.363/.522 slash line entering the finale, and he’s now the AL’s home run leader after two more blasts this weekend. Christian Encarnacion-Strand has quietly heated up too, going 12-for-35 with three homers and seven RBI over his last 10 games.
The problem is what’s missing around them. Baltimore is without Jackson Holliday (wrist, needs surgery), Samuel Basallo (concussion), Luis Robert (hamstring), Ryan Mountcastle (oblique) and Kyle Bradish (abdomen, done for the year) — practically half the projected everyday roster gone before the finale. Sunday’s Orioles starter, Shane Baz, carries a rough 6-15 record and 4.11 ERA into the outing, a tough combination against a Yankees offense that leads all of MLB in runs scored (739).
New York has outscored opponents by 138 runs this season, the best run differential in the American League.
That kind of separation doesn’t disappear just because the games no longer carry playoff stakes. George Lombard Jr., the Yankees’ rookie shortstop who debuted in early August wearing the rare No. 96, has been a nice spark plug in the season’s final weeks, hitting .286 with four home runs and 11 RBI over his last 10 games — exactly the kind of complementary production that makes New York’s lineup so deep from top to bottom, even with regulars getting rest before October.
It’s worth noting Baltimore isn’t just shorthanded at the position-player spots. The bullpen took a hit too, with closer Ryan Helsley done for the year with an elbow issue and Kyle Bradish already shut down on the 60-day injured list. For a team already eliminated from contention, manager Craig Albernaz has had little incentive to push anyone through discomfort down the stretch, which has left Sunday’s roster thinner than the one that won 79 games this year.
Prediction and Best Bet
Baltimore’s lineup still has enough thump in Alonso and Encarnacion-Strand to keep this from getting out of hand, but a shorthanded roster on the road against the AL’s best run-differential team is a tough combination to bet against, especially with Baz on the mound for the Orioles.
The pick:
- Prediction: Yankees 6, Orioles 4
- Best Bet: Yankees on the moneyline
Take New York to close out the regular season with a series win — the roster depth and the pitching matchup both tilt firmly in their favor. Bettors weighing the number should check the live MLB odds page before locking in Sunday’s line.
