Two teams playing out the string meet at Rogers Centre, but the Blue Jays are the ones limping harder into the finish line, dropping three straight while the Reds enter on a modest one-game winning streak.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Blue Jays -1.5
  • Why: Toronto’s offense has more thump top to bottom, and Cincinnati’s rotation depth is running thin this late in a lost season
  • The number to watch: Kazuma Okamoto’s 33 home runs, the most on either roster

Both clubs were eliminated from playoff contention weeks ago, but that doesn’t mean nothing is at stake. The Reds (74-85) sit 13 games back in the NL Wild Card race and are trying to avoid finishing with their worst record in years, while the Blue Jays (77-82) are just trying to salvage some dignity out of a season that started with real expectations in the AL East. Toronto has lost three of its last four series and enters this one having dropped three in a row, a rough stretch that includes getting officially eliminated during a doubleheader loss to Baltimore. Cincinnati, meanwhile, snapped a mini-slide with a win in its last outing and will lean on left-hander Nick Lodolo to open this three-game set.

What the Market Is Saying About This One

Sportsbooks have installed the Blue Jays as home favorites, with moneyline prices generally in the -130 to -136 range for Toronto and Cincinnati sitting around +115 to +116 as the road underdog. Bettors tracking the full live MLB odds board will notice that number has held fairly steady since the opener. The run line has the Blue Jays at -1.5 (+170ish) and the Reds getting +1.5 at a heavily juiced price near -190 to -210, which tells you the market expects this to be more competitive on a straight moneyline than a two-run margin. The total is set at 7.5, hovering right around a coin flip between the over and under across most books — a fair number for two lineups that can both hit but neither of which is running out a shutdown rotation.

Okamoto and De La Cruz Carry the Real Firepower

This game comes down to which lineup’s power bats show up. Kazuma Okamoto has quietly put together one of the best offensive seasons on either roster, hitting .232 with 33 home runs and 89 RBI, and he’s the one hitter in this game capable of erasing a deficit with a single swing. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has had a far quieter year by his standards — he was officially shut out of the playoff race during Wednesday’s doubleheader and is in danger of finishing with an OPS under .700, a real step back from the .848 mark he posted a year ago. Nathan Lukes has been a steady complementary piece in right field, hitting around .273 with 10 home runs and 37 RBI in a part-time role.

Cincinnati counters with Elly De La Cruz, who’s having a monster year at shortstop: a .285 average, 29 home runs, and a .517 slugging mark that makes him the most dangerous hitter in this lineup. Sal Stewart has been right there with him, sitting at .266 with 32 homers of his own. The problem for the Reds is depth — beyond De La Cruz and Stewart, the lineup thins out quickly, with several regulars scuffling well below .220 down the stretch.

Kazuma Okamoto’s 33 home runs are the most of any hitter starting in this series.

That power gap matters in a game with a 7.5 total and two shaky bullpens on both sides. Toronto’s relief corps has real strikeout weapons in Louie Varland and Trevor Rogers, both sporting ERAs south of 2.00, giving the Blue Jays a real advantage if this stays close late. The Reds don’t have an equivalent lockdown arm to lean on in a tight ninth inning, and that’s the kind of small edge that tends to show up when two rebuilding-mode rosters play a coin-flip total.

Neither starter has been especially sharp lately. Both Lodolo and Toronto’s righty have ERAs sitting north of 4.70 for the season, and neither has strung together more than a couple of consistently strong outings over the past month. That opens the door for both bullpens to see plenty of work, which only raises the stakes on which relief corps is fresher and sharper in late innings — and right now that favors the home team.

Prediction and Best Bet

Toronto’s deeper lineup and better bullpen options give it the edge in a game where both starters carry ERAs north of 4.70 on the season. Cincinnati’s offense can hang around for a few innings behind De La Cruz and Stewart, but the Blue Jays should be able to pull away late.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Toronto Blue Jays 7, Cincinnati Reds 4
  2. Best Bet: Blue Jays -1.5

Lay the extra run and side with the home team’s superior bullpen depth to close this one out.
