Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell have made a habit of embarrassing the Aces this summer, and Las Vegas rolls back into Gainbridge Fieldhouse looking to finally snap that trend.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Indiana Fever -1.5
  • Why: The Fever have blown Las Vegas out twice already this season and get A’ja Wilson at home for a third straight try
  • The number to watch: Indiana’s +25-point average margin of victory in its first two meetings with the Aces

Indiana enters Thursday at 19-11, second in the Eastern Conference and fresh off a 2-1 road trip, while Las Vegas sits at 21-9 and second out West, winners of three of its last four. Both teams are jockeying for playoff seeding, but the head-to-head history here is lopsided — Indiana has won both prior meetings this season, including a 109-75 demolition on July 12 when Wilson was back in the lineup and still couldn’t slow the Fever down.

This is also a homecoming spot for Indiana in a literal sense. The Fever are coming off a three-game road trip and get four straight games at Gainbridge Fieldhouse before things get hectic again, and they’ve been one of the better home teams in the league this season. Las Vegas, meanwhile, is trying to avoid a third straight lopsided loss to a team it’s supposed to be competing with for conference positioning — nobody in the Aces’ locker room wants a third blowout on the resume heading into playoff seeding conversations.

What the Market Is Saying About This One

Books have Indiana as a short home favorite, with the Fever hovering around -1.5 on the spread and roughly even money on the moneyline against the Aces. The total sits in the mid-190s, reflecting two offenses that both prefer to play fast — Indiana has scored 100-plus points in six of its last several games, while Las Vegas leans on Wilson’s interior scoring to keep pace. Bettors tracking the full slate can check the latest betting odds before tip-off, since lines on a rivalry like this one tend to move. Given how thoroughly Indiana has controlled the tempo in the first two meetings, there’s a real case the number should be shorter than it is.

Recent Form

Both teams have been rolling lately, but the shape of their success looks different — Indiana’s offense has been historically prolific, while Las Vegas has leaned on Wilson to grind out wins.

Wilson vs. the Fever’s Depth Problem

A’ja Wilson is having another monster year — 26.6 points, 9.6 rebounds, 1.5 steals, and 2.0 blocks a night, numbers that earned her the Western Conference Player of the Month award for July. She’s also chasing history: her 15-game streak of 20-plus point performances is the WNBA’s single-season record, and Wilson owns the league’s all-time streak at 20 straight games spanning two seasons. The problem for Las Vegas is that Wilson has already gone for 20 points against Indiana this season and the Aces still lost by 34.

That’s because Indiana’s backcourt has been nearly impossible to deal with. Kelsey Mitchell won the Eastern Conference Player of the Month award for July after averaging 27.2 points, and she enters Thursday one game away from tying Wilson’s single-season streak of 20-point games, sitting at 14 straight. Caitlin Clark, probable with the back issue that’s nagged her much of the year, is averaging 21.5 points and 8.0 assists and just posted the fourth triple-double of her career last Friday against Portland.

Indiana beat Las Vegas by an average of 25 points across their first two meetings this season.

Wilson can get her buckets. She’s shown that twice already. But Las Vegas doesn’t have a second scorer who’s consistently punished Indiana’s supporting cast the way Mitchell and Clark have punished the Aces’ backcourt. Jackie Young is averaging 17.8 points on the season, but she hasn’t found a rhythm against this particular Fever team, and that gap in secondary scoring is exactly why Indiana has controlled both meetings so thoroughly.

Aliyah Boston’s presence matters here too. She’s probable after dealing with a knee issue, and when healthy she gives Indiana a legitimate answer for Wilson inside — not a shutdown defender by any means, but enough size and physicality to keep the Fever from getting bullied on the glass, which was a real problem for Indiana against bigger frontcourts earlier in the season. Chelsea Gray running the point for Las Vegas is still a matchup problem in isolation, but she hasn’t had the connective-tissue support from the Aces’ wings that Indiana gets from Lexie Hull and the rest of its rotation.

There’s also a pace question. Indiana wants to play fast, lean on Clark and Mitchell in transition, and pile up possessions. Las Vegas is generally more comfortable slowing things down and feeding Wilson in the post. Whoever wins that tempo battle probably wins the game, and Indiana has won it decisively both times already this year.

Prediction and Best Bet

Wilson will get hers, and this game likely tightens up some simply because blowouts of this size rarely happen a third time between the same two teams in one season. But Indiana’s combination of home court, a red-hot backcourt, and a real edge in depth still makes them the play.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Indiana Fever 97, Las Vegas Aces 91
  2. Best Bet: Indiana Fever -1.5

Bet the Fever to protect home court again — this matchup has been one-sided all year, and there’s no reason to expect that changes now.
