Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Montreal Canadiens Game 4 Prediction: Can Lightning Survive Another OT Thriller?

Three straight overtime games define this series — the Lightning trail 2-1 and must win at the Bell Centre to avoid a stunning elimination.

Game 4 of the Tampa Bay Lightning versus Montreal Canadiens series arrives Sunday evening at the Bell Centre in Montreal, with puck drop scheduled for 7:00 PM ET. This has been the most dramatic series of the opening round — all three games have gone to overtime, with Montreal winning two of them to hold a 2-1 series advantage. The Lightning, who came into the playoffs as heavy -310 series favorites, find themselves in a genuinely uncomfortable position. A loss tonight puts them down 3-1 with their season on the line, while a win pulls them even and resets the series as a true best-of-three going forward.

The game-by-game results tell the story of how improbable this series has been. Montreal won Game 1 in overtime, 4-3. Tampa Bay answered in Game 2, also in overtime, 3-2. Then the Canadiens took the series lead with another extra-session decision in Game 3, 3-2. That is three consecutive overtime games — and the margins have never been more than one goal. Both teams have been exceptional in five-on-five play, and when elite goaltending meets elite goaltending in a series like this, things can go either way on any given night or overtime period.

Lightning Installed as Slight Favorites Despite Trailing the Series

Even down 2-1 in the series, oddsmakers still have the Lightning as slight favorites for Game 4 at -119, with the Canadiens as modest home underdogs. The market is reflecting Tampa Bay’s superior roster depth and Nikita Kucherov’s game-changing offensive ability at even strength and on the power play. The over/under sits at 6.0 goals with the under favored — and given that three straight games went to overtime and none featured reckless offensive play, that lean makes complete sense from an analytical standpoint.

Montreal as a home underdog in an overtime-heavy series where they have already won two games is an interesting spot for bettors looking for value. The Bell Centre crowd will be electric with playoff atmosphere, and the Canadiens have already demonstrated they can match Tampa Bay stride for stride when it matters most. But the Lightning are too talented and too experienced to keep losing one-goal games indefinitely — particularly when their season is on the line in Game 4.

Kucherov and Vasilevskiy vs. Montreal’s Remarkable Young Core

Nikita Kucherov put together a spectacular regular season, finishing with 130 points on 44 goals and 86 assists — one of the finest individual performances in Lightning franchise history. Jake Guentzel added 88 points alongside him, and Tampa Bay’s power play ranked among the league’s more dangerous units at 21.0%. The Lightning penalty kill at 82.7% has given Montreal’s power play opportunities to strike at key moments. Between the pipes, Andrei Vasilevskiy was excellent all year with a 2.31 GAA and .912 save percentage — one of the top goaltenders in the world — and yet he is 1-2 in this series because he keeps getting beaten in overtime or by last-second goals.

Montreal’s roster is younger and more surprising than almost anyone anticipated heading into this playoff run. Cole Caufield exploded for 51 goals during the regular season. Nick Suzuki ran the offense with 101 points at center ice. Rookie defenseman Lane Hutson contributed 78 points from the blue line — nearly unprecedented production for a first-year blueliner. Ivan Demidov added 62 points, and Juraj Slafkovsky chipped in 73. The Canadiens power play clicked at 23.4%, actually outpacing Tampa Bay’s unit. In goal, rookie Jakub Dobes has been sensational — his regular-season numbers of 2.69 GAA and .904 SV% do not fully capture how well he has played in these high-pressure moments. He has outperformed Vasilevskiy in terms of series wins, which is a sentence almost nobody predicted heading into these playoffs.

The pattern here strongly suggests another tight, extra-session contest. Both teams play excellent defensive structure, both goaltenders are capable of carrying their clubs through overtime periods, and the series has essentially become a coin flip at this point. Whoever scores the overtime goal in Game 4 will have a massive series advantage heading into a potential Game 5 or beyond. Prediction and Best Bet

Tampa Bay is not going to go away quietly. Kucherov and Vasilevskiy are Hall of Fame-caliber players who know what it takes to win in the playoffs, and the Lightning will come into the Bell Centre with desperate edge that focuses elite players. Their offensive talent gives them every opportunity to solve Dobes for the second time in this series. That said, Montreal has already demonstrated they can match Tampa stride for stride, and the home crowd will be deafening from the opening puck drop.

The best play in this game is the under at 6.0. Three straight overtime games have been decided by a single goal and none featured run-and-gun offense — both coaches are clearly prioritizing defensive structure. The under has strong value given the series context, and the Lightning at -119 is the slight moneyline lean for a team that cannot afford to go down 3-1 with the roster they have assembled.

  • Prediction: Tampa Bay Lightning 3, Montreal Canadiens 2 (OT)
  • Best Bet: Under 6.0 total goals

Three straight overtime games do not happen by accident — this series is defined by defensive excellence and elite goaltending on both sides of the ice. The under is clearly the right side given everything we have seen through three games, and the Lightning bouncing back at -119 feels like the right moneyline choice to pair with it at the Bell Centre on Sunday evening.
