Saturday’s slate is one game deep, but it is a big one: the Rays and Guardians meet in ALCS Game 4 at Progressive Field at 8:00 PM ET after Friday’s rainout, with Cleveland leading the series 2-1. When there is only one game to bet, the player prop market is where you can find the sharpest angles, and tonight’s setup is unusual because the Guardians are using a bullpen game with Shawn Armstrong as the opener.
All three of today’s picks come from the pitcher side of the board and are built on one idea: the lines are set low because of small postseason samples, but the season-long numbers tell a different story. We will explain the why behind each one so you know exactly what you are betting on.
Nick Martinez Over 2.5 Strikeouts (3+ Ks)
Martinez is not a flame-thrower, and his 5.45 strikeouts per nine innings from the regular season will not jump off the page. But the prop is not asking for a big number. He only has to reach three strikeouts, and over 31 starts and 180 innings he finished with 109 strikeouts against just 26 walks, a 3.10 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. That works out to roughly 3.5 strikeouts per start, which already clears this line on average. One preview of the matchup noted he has racked up 3+ strikeout games in nine of his last 10 starts, and the market is pricing it close to a coin flip, with DraftKings showing about +104 for 3+ strikeouts and prediction markets around 47 cents for the Over. Check your book, because prices on this one are moving.
The matchup helps too. Martinez has faced Cleveland before and has handled them, with reports citing 18 strikeouts across eight career appearances against them and 13 scoreless innings against the Guardians this season. The Guardians lineup is also full of hitters who can be beaten with off-speed stuff and location, which is exactly how Martinez works. The one thing that held this number down was his last outing, a 3.2-inning, three-strikeout start in ALDS Game 3 against the Yankees, which is a small sample and one the market may be overweighting. He now comes in on eight days of rest.
Nick Martinez Over 11.5 Total Outs
This is the same pitcher viewed through a workload lens, and it is worth understanding why. Total outs simply measures how deep he goes: 11.5 means he needs to record 12 outs, or four full innings. During the regular season Martinez recorded 540 outs over 31 starts, about 17 outs per start, and he threw 2,524 pitches, roughly 81 per outing. He had 16 quality starts. By a normal-season yardstick, 12 outs is a low bar, and it is one he cleared in most of his starts.
The risk is real and worth naming. In the postseason managers pull starters faster, and the Rays got only 3.2 innings out of him last time. But there are reasons to think Game 4 plays out differently. The Guardians are starting an opener and a bullpen game, so Tampa Bay is not facing a pitcher who will pile up innings, and the Rays need length from Martinez to protect their own bullpen with Game 5 now pushed to Sunday. Progressive Field also ranks 20th of 30 parks for hitter friendliness on a three-year basis, and a chilly night with strong wind should hold the ball in the yard. Books list this at roughly 55 cents for the Over on Kalshi, so it is not free money, but the number is beatable. Check your book for the exact juice.
Shawn Armstrong Over 1.5 Strikeouts (+195)
Armstrong is the opener, which means his job is to face the top of the Rays lineup, probably for one inning and maybe two. That is why his strikeout line is only 1.5 and why the price on the Over is long, around +195 at BetMGM. His total outs line is 3.5 with the Over at about even money, which tells you the book expects a short outing. But look at what he has actually done this October: 5.1 scoreless innings with five strikeouts and just one hit allowed, a 0.00 ERA and a 0.19 WHIP across the postseason, and he has never allowed a run in six career playoff appearances.
Two strikeouts in an inning and a half is a lot to ask in a vacuum, but this is a plus-money bet, not a heavy favorite. Armstrong struck out 34 batters during the regular season, so he can miss bats, and he is facing a Rays top of the order built around Yandy Diaz, Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero. Cleveland has leaned on him in high-leverage spots all October, and with Bibee and Cantillo behind him he can pitch with maximum intensity for a short stretch. At +195 you only need this to hit about one time in three to break even, and his postseason rate of nearly one strikeout per inning makes that realistic if he works two innings. Treat it as a smaller, higher-payout play.
Lock These In
The thread connecting all three plays is modest lines on pitchers who have shown they can clear them. Martinez gets two angles, strikeouts and workload, while Armstrong is the longer-priced swing.
