The Golden State Valkyries can’t win a WNBA Finals game without scoring, and the Atlanta Dream have spent two straight games making sure that doesn’t happen.
Quick take:
- Pick: Atlanta Dream -4.5
- Why: Atlanta’s top-five defense has held Golden State under 35 percent shooting in every game of the series, and the Dream have now won two straight by 14 and 26 points.
- The number to watch: Gabby Williams is 8-for-33 from the field over her last two games.
Game 4 of the WNBA Finals tips off Saturday at 1 p.m. ET from State Farm Arena, with the Dream holding a 2-1 series lead and a chance to move one win away from the first championship in franchise history. The Valkyries are 32-12 and the No. 2 seed. Atlanta is 30-14 as the No. 4 seed. Golden State took Game 1 at home, 68-64, behind 26 points from Williams.
Since then, it has been all Atlanta. The Dream won Game 2 in San Francisco, 79-65, then flattened the Valkyries 97-71 at home on Wednesday. A Golden State win Saturday sends the series back to the Bay Area tied 2-2. A loss, and the Valkyries are staring at a 3-1 hole.
The Market Has Picked a Side, and the Price Is Steep
DraftKings has the Dream as 4.5-point home favorites at -115, with the Valkyries at +4.5 (-105). The moneyline sits at Atlanta -192 and Golden State +160, and the total is 153.5. That total is a useful tell: Golden State has not topped 71 points in a single Finals game, so the market is pricing a grind in which Atlanta controls the pace.
There is a sliver of contrarian value on the other side. Golden State is 7-4 against the spread as a road underdog this season, playoffs included, and the Valkyries swept all three regular-season meetings with Atlanta. Still, the series has not looked like the regular season. The title market agrees: the Dream are now around -285 to win the championship, up from +105 at the start of the Finals. Can Golden State Find Any Offense?
The Valkyries led the WNBA in made threes per game during the regular season, yet they finished only seventh in offensive rating. That gap has been exposed by an Atlanta defense ranked in the top five. Golden State shot 32.1 percent in Game 1, 34.4 percent in Game 2 and 34.8 percent in Game 3, and it has not topped 71 points in any of them. The only reason it has a Finals win at all is that Game 1 turned into a 68-64 slugfest where its defense closed the door.
Williams has carried much of the load, but she has cooled badly, going 8 of 33 over her last two games, including 5-for-18 in Game 3. Veronica Burton went 1-for-7 in Game 3, and Tiffany Hayes, a longtime Dream guard facing her old franchise, shot 6-for-13 but was a minus-17 in her 24 minutes. When the primary options struggle, there has not been enough secondary scoring to cover for them.
Golden State has scored 71 points or fewer in all three Finals games and has not shot better than 34.8 percent in any of them.
Atlanta, meanwhile, is getting scoring from everywhere. Five Dream players hit double figures in Game 3, led by Angel Reese’s 21 points and 12 rebounds, with Rhyne Howard adding 16 points and five steals, Naz Hillmon 15 and Jordin Canada 10 points and eight assists. Reese has posted 12, 16 and 12 rebounds in the three Finals games, including a 30-point, 16-rebound masterpiece in Game 2, and is the clear front-runner for Finals MVP.
The Dream are not perfectly healthy. Brionna Jones is out, and Allisha Gray, who scored 18 in Game 2, has said she is feeling fine but is not at 100 percent with a hand issue. The Valkyries list no injuries. Neither situation is likely to swing the matchup the way Golden State’s shooting will.
The path for the Valkyries is narrow but real. They need to turn this into a half-court, defense-first game, protect the ball (they committed 19 turnovers in Game 2), and get Williams and Burton back to something close to their normal selves. Even then, they are asking a cold offense to beat a hot, deep team on its home floor.
Prediction and Best Bet
Atlanta has the better defense, the deeper rotation, the home crowd and the momentum, and Golden State has not yet shown it can score enough to beat it more than once. The Valkyries will fight, because Game 4 is effectively a must-win, and a 4.5-point spread leaves room for a tight finish. But the Dream have won the last two games by 14 and 26, and the shooting numbers say it is not a fluke.
The pick:
- Prediction: Atlanta Dream 80, Golden State Valkyries 68
- Best Bet: Atlanta Dream -4.5
