Rail-Drawn Luster Remains Heavy Favorite for King’s Plate Glory at Woodbine

Luster drew the rail for Saturday’s CA$1 million King’s Plate Stakes at Woodbine, but the filly remains the heavy favorite to become just the 40th female winner in the race’s 166-year history. The Gainesway Stable and Andrew Rosen homebred earned the last pick in this year’s “pick your post” format, a twist that leaves her Hall of Fame connections working from the rail in North America’s oldest continuously run horse race.

The King’s Plate is the first jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown and carries a distinctly Canadian identity: it’s restricted to Canadian-bred horses and has been run over Woodbine’s all-weather surface since 2007. While only three fillies have ever won the Kentucky Derby, 39 have captured the King’s Plate — and Luster is positioned to make it 40 when the race goes Aug. 15.

A Perfect Record Against Fillies

Luster, a gray/roan daughter of Knicks Go, has yet to run against males but has dominated the filly ranks with a 4-0-1 record from five career starts. Her resume includes a Woodbine Oaks victory, a win in the Selene Stakes (G3), an allowance score at Keeneland, and a maiden win at Woodbine last summer. Her only loss came in the Ruling Angel Stakes, a 7-furlong sprint on Woodbine’s Tapeta surface to open her 2026 campaign — a distance and surface combination that didn’t play to her strengths.

Her connections are stacked with pedigree. Trainer Josie Carroll, a Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Famer, has already won the Plate three times, including with the filly Inglorious 15 years ago. Jockey John Velazquez, an American Hall of Famer tasked with navigating the rail post, previously won the Plate aboard Wonder Gadot in 2018 and is a perfect 2-for-2 on Luster.

The Woodbine Oaks Statement

Velazquez’s most recent trip aboard Luster came in the July 19 Woodbine Oaks, where he barely had to ask her down the stretch as she cruised to a 5 1/2-length victory, completing 1 1/8 miles in 1:50.99 — 1.18 seconds faster than the Plate Trial Stakes run over the same distance earlier that card. Carroll downplayed any disadvantage tied to the rail draw, calling it simply the shortest way around the track, and praised her filly’s competitive streak. “She just throws it on the line every time,” Carroll said. “She’s tired for three days after she runs. She just gives you everything she has.”

Carroll will also saddle Don Ique, owned by Mike Cooke, who finished fifth in the Plate Trial and breaks from post 6. That kind of two-horse trainer entry adds another layer of intrigue, giving Carroll multiple paths to a fourth Plate title.

The Rest of the Field

Luster’s chief competition figures to come from a trio of colts stretching out in distance. Dixie Law, a Tiz the Law filly trained by Dale Desruisseaux for Hillsbrook Farms, will try to close the gap over the extended 1 1/4-mile distance. Desruisseaux also sends out Highwaytothemoon, who won three of his first six starts as a sprinter before capturing the Plate Trial by saving ground and outfinishing wide-rallying runner-up Imyourmedicineman. Desruisseaux acknowledged some hesitation about the 1 1/8-mile Plate Trial distance, and now Highwaytothemoon stretches out yet another furlong for Saturday’s race — though his trainer noted the colt “can keep proving me wrong.”

Jockey Rafael Hernandez rides Highwaytothemoon and can tie retired greats Avelino Gomez, Sandy Hawley, and Robin Platts as a four-time Plate winner with a victory. Brachetto and Magical Factor, who finished 1-2 in the June 27 Marine Stakes (G3), round out the group of serious contenders.

Saturday’s Woodbine card features five additional stakes races, three of them graded, giving horse racing bettors plenty of action beyond the marquee event. The King’s Plate will be televised nationally in Canada on Citytv, with a sell-out on-track crowd expected.
