The Padres have the better record and the hotter bat, but it’s the Guardians who just took Game 3 of this series behind a lineup finally getting healthy in the middle of it.
Quick take:
- Pick: Padres -1.5
- Why: San Diego’s lineup is a full tier better and Casey Mize has been the more reliable arm all season
- The number to watch: Tanner Bibee is 4-12 with a 3.99 ERA and Cleveland is 6-17 against the spread in his starts
San Diego enters Sunday at 66-58, sitting eight games back of the Dodgers in the NL West but firmly in the thick of the Wild Card race. Cleveland is the opposite story: 60-64, stuck in last place in a bunched-up AL Central, 5.5 games out of a playoff spot with the calendar working against them.
This is the rubber match of sorts on the back end of a four-game set at Progressive Field. The Padres took the series opener 7-5, Cleveland answered with a 6-1 win Saturday, and now it comes down to Sunday afternoon before San Diego heads out of town.
Why the Market Still Likes San Diego on the Road
Vegas has the Padres favored despite playing on the road, and the number tells you something about how each team is viewed roster-for-roster. San Diego is around -1.5 on the run line with Cleveland getting the plus-money side at home, and the total sits at 8.5. That’s a fairly heavy lean toward the Padres for a road team, which usually only happens when the market sees a real gap in overall talent rather than just recent form. Bettors tracking the full slate can check the live MLB odds board for how the number has moved leading into first pitch.
Part of that gap is simple roster construction. San Diego still has multiple everyday players capable of changing a game with one swing, while Cleveland’s lineup card has been shuffled by injury for weeks. Books also tend to shade series finales toward the team that’s shown more firepower over the sample, and the Padres have scored in bunches even during their uneven stretches — five runs here, seven there — compared to a Guardians offense that’s had to grind out low-scoring wins.

Recent Form
Both clubs have been streaky rather than steady over the last couple of weeks, and the head-to-head picture from this series says as much about matchups as it does about which team is “better” right now.

Ramirez’s Absence Is Still the Story in Cleveland
The single biggest swing factor in this series has nothing to do with Sunday’s starters — it’s Jose Ramirez’s lost season. Cleveland’s franchise third baseman fractured the hamate bone in his left hand in mid-June, had surgery, and hasn’t looked like himself since returning July 22. Over his last 17 games he’s hitting just .197 with zero extra-base hits and four RBI, and he sat out Friday’s series opener entirely with lingering wrist inflammation. A player who averaged 35 homers and an .850 OPS over the previous two seasons is now a shell of that, and it’s dragging down a lineup that doesn’t have much thump behind him.
Steven Kwan has quietly been the one bright spot, hitting .441 since the All-Star break and .306 with runners in scoring position on the year — he’s been sliding into the DH spot and hitting leadoff while Angel Genao fills in at third. But one hot bat can’t fully offset losing a middle-of-the-order force like Ramirez, especially against a Padres lineup that, for all its own inconsistency, still has real thunder in Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr.
Jose Ramirez is hitting .197 with zero extra-base hits in his last 17 games since returning from hand surgery.
Machado is slugging 23 home runs with 70 RBI despite a modest .215 average, and Tatis is hitting .280 with a .353 on-base percentage — the kind of top-of-the-order presence that keeps innings alive even when the Padres aren’t squaring balls up. San Diego’s issue all year has been a shaky, injury-ravaged rotation with Musgrove, Yu Darvish, Lucas Giolito and Nick Pivetta all out at various points, but Casey Mize has emerged as a stabilizing waiver-wire pickup, posting a 3.38 ERA that’s actually outpaced his peripheral numbers a bit.
On the mound Sunday, Bibee’s overall numbers mask a pitcher who has had trouble putting away hitters in high-leverage spots. His 4-12 record isn’t just bad luck — Cleveland is 6-17 against the spread in his starts this season, a brutal number that suggests the offense simply hasn’t shown up behind him even in the games where he’s pitched well enough to keep it competitive. Mize, by contrast, has given San Diego length and confidence in a rotation that badly needed both.
Prediction and Best Bet
Cleveland has enough pitching to keep Sunday’s game competitive for a few innings, and Bibee has flashed better stuff than his record suggests at times this season. But a lineup missing a functional version of its best hitter is a tough sell against a Padres offense with real thump in the middle, even on the road. San Diego’s deeper collection of everyday threats should be enough to close out the series with a win, and probably a comfortable one given how thin Cleveland’s lineup looks without Ramirez.
The pick:
- Prediction: Padres 6, Guardians 3
- Best Bet: Padres -1.5
Fade the Guardians until Ramirez looks like himself again — right now, this lineup just doesn’t have enough behind Kwan to keep pace with a Padres team getting production from its stars.
