The top-seeded Minnesota Lynx have never lost a home playoff series in franchise history, but they’ve already lost this one’s opener on their own floor — now they need a road win at Barclays Center just to keep the season alive.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Minnesota Lynx -3.5
  • Why: Minnesota was the league’s best team for five months and gets last change to fix the interior issues that sank Game 1
  • The number to watch: Breanna Stewart’s 13-for-25 3-point shooting as a team in Game 1 — that clip is nearly impossible to sustain twice in a row

New York stole Game 1 in Minneapolis 91-75 on Sunday, with Breanna Stewart turning in one of the most complete performances in playoff history — 34 points, 12 rebounds, six assists, two steals and two blocks, becoming the first player ever to hit that exact statistical line in a postseason game. That result flips the pressure entirely onto Minnesota, which finished the regular season 33-11 and claimed the No. 1 seed in the West for the second straight year. Now the Lynx are one loss from an early playoff exit against the No. 8 seed they beat in five games for the 2024 title.

Game 2 tips off at 8:30 PM ET at Barclays Center, with Minnesota needing a win to force a decisive Game 3 back at Target Center on Thursday. Bettors tracking the line movement can check the latest live NBA odds hub for a sense of how quickly playoff lines shift after a result like Sunday’s.

What the Betting Market Is Saying After Game 1

Minnesota opened as roughly a touchdown favorite for this series and covered nothing in Game 1, so the number has come down noticeably for Game 2 — Minnesota is now sitting around -3.5 on most boards after closing near -7.5 in the opener. The total has also dropped from the 174-175 range down to 172.5, suggesting the market expects a tighter, lower-possession game as the Lynx try to slow the pace and get back to their identity on the glass. New York, appropriately, is priced as live road underdogs off the strength of that Game 1 performance, sitting around +3.5 and +130 to +140 on the moneyline depending on the book.

Minnesota carried a six-game winning streak into the playoffs behind a dominant regular-season finale, while New York enters riding the emotional high of a road statement win — even after a rockier finish to the regular season that included a loss to Atlanta in their last tune-up.

Collier’s Conditioning and New York’s Size Problem

The story of Game 1 wasn’t really about shot luck — it was about size and spacing. New York’s frontcourt combination of Stewart and Jonquel Jones has given Minnesota fits going back to the 2024 Finals, and it showed up again as the Lynx surrendered 45 rebounds and got outshot from three 52% to 34.6%. Napheesa Collier, back from offseason ankle surgeries and still working toward peak form, fouled out while trying to check Stewart for most of the afternoon, finishing with 12 points, five rebounds and three assists on 6-for-14 shooting. Center Natasha Howard also fouled out, which left Minnesota thin down the stretch against a Liberty team that shot 88.9% from the free-throw line and made the Lynx pay for every whistle.

Rookie floor general Olivia Miles, who missed time late in the regular season with a calf injury, had a quiet playoff debut — 11 points on 3-for-12 shooting with just one assist. If she’s fully right physically after sitting out two of Minnesota’s final three regular-season games, her ability to organize the offense and push tempo becomes one of the swing factors for Game 2. On the wing, Kayla McBride gives Minnesota a shooting outlet that can punish New York if the Liberty over-help off her to load up on Collier and Miles inside.

Stewart is averaging 26.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals over her last three games — a level no defense in the league has been able to slow down right now.

New York isn’t fully healthy, either. Stewart and Jonquel Jones both dealt with knee and ankle issues, respectively, in the final week of the regular season, and Jones rolled her ankle again in the regular-season finale against Atlanta. Both played through it in Game 1 and looked fine, but a second game in three days at home is a different physical test, especially for Jones, who’s central to controlling the glass against Minnesota’s smaller frontcourt.

Minnesota’s counter has to start on the boards. The Lynx are a significantly better rebounding team over the course of the season, and Game 1’s 16-rebound deficit is not sustainable across a series — expect Minnesota to get more physical early and lean harder on Collier and Howard in the post rather than letting the game turn into a track meet that favors New York’s shooters. For fans looking to get a bet down on the series, the DraftKings promo code is one of the more straightforward offers available for new signups this week.

Prediction and Best Bet

Minnesota’s margin for error just got a lot smaller, and elimination usually brings out the best in a top seed that spent the entire summer atop the West. New York’s outside shooting was historically hot in Game 1, and betting on that level of accuracy repeating on the road in a must-win environment for the home team is a tough ask. Look for the Lynx to tighten up defensively in the paint, get Collier going early, and even the series behind a desperate performance in front of their fanbase watching from Minneapolis.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Minnesota Lynx 84, New York Liberty 78
  2. Best Bet: Minnesota Lynx -3.5

New York proved it can win in Minneapolis, but asking the Liberty to shoot 52% from deep again while closing out this series in someone else’s building is betting against the odds — and against a top seed with too much on the line to lose twice in a row.
