Seattle just took the last two games of this series, and now they’re trying to do something they haven’t done all year against Houston: win a series in Daikin Park outright.
Quick take:
- Pick: Astros -1.5
- Why: Houston’s lineup has too much thump at the top with Yordan Alvarez heating up, and Seattle’s rotation is thin after burning through arms the last two nights
- The number to watch: Yordan Alvarez is hitting .322 with 35 home runs and a 1.057 OPS this season
The Astros sit atop the AL West at 63-60, while the Mariners are scrapping to stay relevant at 58-66, six games back in third place. But records only tell part of the story here — Seattle has flipped the script on Houston all season, taking eight of ten meetings in 2026, including Saturday’s 10-5 win. That kind of dominance over a division rival doesn’t happen by accident, and it’s part of why this series finale carries more juice than a September game between a first-place team and a third-place team usually would.
Why the Market Isn’t Buying Another Mariners Upset
Books have Houston favored at -136 on the MLB odds board, with Seattle getting +116 as the road underdog. The run line has the Astros at -1.5 (+158) and the Mariners at +1.5 (-194), while the total sits at 7.5. Despite Seattle winning the head-to-head series handily this year, oddsmakers are leaning on Houston’s overall roster talent and home-field cushion at Daikin Park, where the Astros are a much stronger 31-29 compared to their pedestrian 32-31 on the road.

Alvarez Is Carrying Houston Right Now
Yordan Alvarez has been the best hitter on either roster by a wide margin, slashing .322/.436/.621 with 35 home runs and 87 RBI. He’s the engine of an Astros offense that ranks third in the league in home runs, and with Jose Altuve managing a nagging foot issue that’s kept him day-to-day for much of the past week, Houston needs Alvarez to keep carrying the load in the middle of the order. Carlos Correa remains out for the season following ankle surgery, and rotation depth has taken hits too — Mike Burrows (elbow) isn’t expected back until around August 18, thinning an already stretched Houston staff.
On the other side, Julio Rodriguez has quietly put together a solid year at .257/.324/.428 with 19 homers, 52 RBI and 15 stolen bases, giving Seattle a legitimate table-setter even as the rest of the lineup has struggled to find consistency. Cal Raleigh, who set the baseball world on fire with a historic 2025 season, has scuffled hard in 2026 — he’s hitting just .156 with 12 home runs, a stunning dropoff that’s sapped a huge chunk of thump from the middle of Seattle’s order.
Seattle has won eight of its ten meetings with Houston this season, including back-to-back wins to close out this series.
That head-to-head dominance is real, and it’s worth respecting. But a lot of it happened during stretches when Houston’s rotation and lineup weren’t fully healthy, and Correa’s absence continues to loom over the middle infield. Seattle’s bullpen has also been leaned on heavily over the last two games, which matters in a getaway series finale where fresh arms often decide things late.
Houston’s lineup depth, even without Altuve at full strength, gives the Astros more paths to putting up a crooked number than Seattle’s offense — which outside of Rodriguez and Josh Naylor has had trouble stringing together rallies. Naylor has been a steady presence at first base for Seattle, hitting .264 with 10 home runs and a team-leading 23 stolen bases, giving the Mariners at least one more reliable bat behind Rodriguez when the lineup needs a spark.
Houston’s pitching staff has absorbed some real hits this year, but the bullpen has stabilized in August, and that’s the group Seattle will need to solve after seeing Houston’s relievers in each of the first two games of this set. The total sitting at 7.5 suggests the market expects some offense from both sides, and given how these two lineups have traded runs all season — Saturday’s game alone produced 15 combined runs — that number feels fair rather than inflated.
Prediction and Best Bet
Houston’s superior roster talent and the fatigue factor working against Seattle’s bullpen after two straight taxing games tip this one toward the Astros, even with the season series lopsided in the Mariners’ favor.
The pick:
- Prediction: Houston Astros 6, Seattle Mariners 3
- Best Bet: Astros -1.5
Bet on Houston’s depth showing up in a getaway finale where Seattle’s bullpen is running on fumes.
