The Lynx have spent two years waiting for a shot at revenge, and now they get it in the building where they can least afford to blow it.
Quick take:
- Pick: Minnesota Lynx -6.5
- Why: Home court, health, and a full season of top-seed dominance outweigh New York’s recent head-to-head edge
- The number to watch: Minnesota is 33-11 with the WNBA’s best record, and Napheesa Collier is averaging 16.8 points on 50% shooting since returning from injury
Minnesota enters Game 1 of this best-of-three first-round series as the No. 1 overall seed at 33-11, the top mark in the league and their second straight regular season atop the West. New York limped in as the No. 8 seed at 26-18 after an injury-riddled year that included Sabrina Ionescu missing most of the first five weeks and Leonie Fiebich losing seven weeks to a foot injury in July and August. This is also a rematch of the 2024 WNBA Finals, when the Liberty beat the Lynx in five games at Barclays Center to win their first championship in franchise history — a series that still stings in Minneapolis.
Minnesota opened as a 6.5-point home favorite with the total sitting right around 173.5, and the moneyline has the Lynx around -258 to New York’s +210 on the ESPN board. That’s a fairly standard home-favorite line for the No. 1 seed against a No. 8 seed, and bettors using a DraftKings promo code can find that number posted across the major books, but it undersells how competitive this specific matchup has been. New York actually won the regular-season series 2-1, including a 93-81 win in Minneapolis just nine days ago on September 18. The market is pricing in playoff seeding and Minnesota’s superior overall body of work, not necessarily who’s actually playing better basketball right now.
| Sunday, September 27 at 2:00 PM | Spread | Money | Total |
| New York Liberty | +7.5 (-115) | +235 | O 172.5 (-114) |
| Minnesota Lynx | -7.5 (-108) | -280 | U 172.5 (-109) |
Minnesota’s underlying form paints a team that’s dominant on the whole but stumbled down the stretch, while New York enters battle-tested from grinding through a brutal injury stretch to even make the playoffs.

Napheesa Collier’s health is the single biggest swing factor in this series. Since being limited earlier in the year, she’s been putting up 16.8 points, 6.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game on 50% shooting and an absurd 44.4% from three for a supposed non-shooter. When Collier is at full strength, Minnesota’s offense has multiple releases — Natasha Howard is still grabbing 7.6 rebounds a night, and this roster has enough two-way pieces to make life miserable defensively.
New York counters with the best individual player in this series in Breanna Stewart, who closed the regular season on an absolute tear — three straight 24-plus point games, averaging 26.0 points, 10.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 2.0 steals over that stretch. Stewart isn’t on the injury report for Game 1 despite some knee soreness that held her out of the finale. Sabrina Ionescu (14.8 PPG, 4.8 APG) and Jonquel Jones (9.1 RPG) round out a Liberty core that’s genuinely championship-tested, even if health has robbed them of consistency all season.
New York won two of three head-to-head matchups against Minnesota this season and lost the third by only five points.
That’s the tension at the center of this series. Minnesota was the better team over 44 games. New York was the better team in the three games that mattered most between them this year. Fiebich’s return to full health matters here too — the Liberty are 14-6 with her available this season and 12-11 without her, and having their full rotation back for the first time in months gives New York a deeper, more complete roster than the one that stumbled into the 8-seed.
Both benches also carry real weight in this series. Minnesota’s depth chart has quietly been one of the league’s best all year, giving the Lynx a rotation that can absorb foul trouble or an off shooting night from any single starter without the offense stalling out. New York doesn’t have that same margin for error given how much of its season was spent piecing together lineups around injuries, which is exactly why every possession in a low-margin road environment like Target Center carries extra weight for the Liberty. Crowd noise and unfamiliarity with playoff atmosphere have bitten lower seeds before, and Minnesota’s players have specifically pointed to their 2024 Finals collapse as motivation heading into this exact scenario.
Home court, a full season of depth, and a healthy Collier are enough to tip this one back toward Minnesota in Game 1, even accounting for New York’s recent success in this series. The Lynx have had two years to think about how their last meeting with this team ended, and Target Center will be rocking for a matinee tip-off on ABC.
The pick:
Fade the recent head-to-head trend here — Minnesota’s overall season profile and home floor are too strong to bet against in a series opener, and this line still has some value attached to it given the two-year grudge match angle.
