Oregon State freshman receiver Jesse Legree, the leading receiver in college football, announced Friday that he is staying with the Beavers for the 2027 season and will not enter the transfer portal. Legree made the announcement live on CBS Sports HQ from Baltimore and followed it with a re-signing ceremony at his old high school, Saint Frances Academy, while Oregon State was on its bye week.

The timing was unusual. Legree is barely halfway through his first college season, yet he put his future in writing months before the portal opens. For newer fans, the transfer portal is the system that lets college players switch schools without sitting out a year, and it has become the main way rosters get rebuilt each winter. The next window opens January 4, 2027, and lasts 10 days. Because players can now earn money from their name, image and likeness (NIL), a star at a school like Oregon State can be recruited by richer programs, and industry insiders told The Athletic he would likely have drawn seven-figure offers.

A Breakout Season Built on 100-Yard Games

Legree arrived in Corvallis as a three-star recruit in the class of 2026. He was a defensive back at Saint Frances Academy until a position switch before his senior year moved him to wide receiver, and Oregon State was the only FBS program to offer him a scholarship as a receiver. That bet is now one of the best in the country.

Through seven games, Legree has 46 catches for 1,040 yards and 14 touchdowns. He leads the nation in receiving yards, receiving touchdowns and receiving yards per game at 148.6. He has topped 100 yards and scored a touchdown in every game, including four straight games with multiple scores. His biggest outings came against Texas Tech, with eight catches for 240 yards and two touchdowns, and San Diego State, with 10 catches for 191 yards and three touchdowns. His 22.6 yards per catch shows how often he turns short plays into long ones.

Legree said the move was about building something at Oregon State. He told CBS Sports he wanted to help bring in more recruits and transfers, and he said he believes head coach JaMarcus Shephard will grow the program into something different in the coming years. He told ESPN that the Beavers have built a great culture and that it is only going to get bigger.

The Offense Around Him

Legree is the centerpiece of an Oregon State attack that ranks among the best in the country. The Beavers are 5-2 and averaging 42.7 points and 527 yards per game. They are coming off a 48-30 win over Washington State, and their only losses came against Power 4 opponents Houston and Texas Tech. Oregon State plays at Fresno State on October 31, then hosts Texas State on November 7.

The Betting Angle: Heisman Odds and Beavers Futures

Oddsmakers were already paying attention. Legree was listed as the No. 5 Heisman Trophy favorite at 18-1 on one major sportsbook, in a race led by Ohio State receiver Jeremiah Smith. In the most recent odds update reviewed here, Smith was the favorite at -120, down from -220 a week earlier, with Miami quarterback Darian Mensah next at +300. Smith has 984 yards and 12 touchdowns, so Legree is ahead of him in both categories. Receivers rarely win the Heisman, and voters tend to favor quarterbacks and players on top-ranked teams, which helps explain why Legree’s price is longer than his stats suggest.

The decision does not change this season’s Heisman math, since Legree could not have left before January. What it changes is the 2027 outlook. Next year’s Heisman futures, Oregon State win totals and conference prices will be set with Legree on the roster rather than as an open question. Oregon State’s 2026 win total sat at 4.5 entering the year, and the Beavers have already won five games. They were also priced at +2000 to win the Pac-12 at one book, with Boise State the favorite at +135. A returning star at a premium skill position is the type of fact that tends to tighten those numbers once 2027 markets are posted.

The point spread record also shows how the market has lagged. Oregon State is 6-1 against the spread this season, according to one odds tracker, with the lone miss coming against Washington State when the Beavers were laying more than 18 points. The Fresno State game is the next test of whether the market has caught up.

For newer bettors, the takeaway is simple. Player futures like the Heisman move on production and perception, not just talent, and a loyalty announcement like this can change how a team is valued for next season. Odds and lines move quickly, so check current prices before drawing conclusions.
