Cleveland stole home-field advantage in Game 1, and now Parker Messick has to prove the Guardians’ bullpen-fueled magic wasn’t a one-night trick against the best record in the American League.
Quick take:
- Pick: Rays -1.5
- Why: Tampa Bay’s lineup got a dose of reality in Game 1 and Freddy Peralta gives them a real stopper, something Drew Rasmussen couldn’t quite be after the sixth inning.
- The number to watch: Parker Messick hasn’t completed five innings in either of his two ALDS starts.
The Guardians pulled off exactly the kind of win that can either launch an upset or lull a team into a false sense of security. Cleveland trailed 2-0 into the sixth inning of Game 1 before a Chase DeLauter homer, a Patrick Bailey blast, a two-run Nathaniel Lowe single and a three-run ninth buried the Rays 7-3 at Tropicana Field. It was the Guardians’ first win over Tampa Bay all year after dropping five of six meetings during the regular season, a trend bettors can track live on MLB odds pages all series long.
That stat matters here. Cleveland arrived in St. Petersburg as the clear underdog — an 85-77 Wild Card team facing a 98-win division champion that swept the Yankees in the ALDS without much drama. One result doesn’t erase that gap, even if it does flip the series lead.
Jose Ramirez was the engine in Game 1, racking up three hits and coming a triple short of the cycle while driving in insurance runs late. Chase DeLauter matched him blow for blow, going deep and setting the table for Cleveland’s eighth-inning rally. Tampa Bay, for its part, got exactly the kind of start it wanted from its lineup, jumping ahead 2-0 in the first inning before its bullpen couldn’t hold the line against a deep Cleveland order.
Oddsmakers still like the Rays in Game 2, with Tampa Bay sitting at -139 on the moneyline and -1.5 on the run line, while Cleveland is priced at +111. The total has come in a touch to 6.5 after Monday’s track meet. None of that is surprising — Freddy Peralta gets the ball for Tampa Bay, and he was excellent in his lone ALDS outing against the Yankees, holding New York to one run over 4.2 innings. His 2026 season was a story of two levels: a rough 4.99 ERA across 22 starts with the Mets before a trade brought him to Tampa Bay, where he settled in with a 3.25 ERA over his final 10 regular-season starts.
| Tuesday, October 13 at 8:00 PM | Spread | Money | Total |

| Tampa Bay Rays | -1.5 (163) | -132 | U 6.5 (-102) |
Both bullpens were heavily taxed in Game 1, and how each club’s relief corps bounces back tonight could matter as much as the starters do.

Parker Messick enters Game 2 with a strong regular-season résumé — a 2.56 ERA over 32 starts and 186.1 innings with 193 strikeouts — but his two ALDS starts against the White Sox told a different story. He allowed two runs in each outing and failed to get through five innings either time, which forced Cleveland’s bullpen into heavy October workloads well before the Rays series even began. If that pattern repeats, manager Stephen Vogt will again be leaning on a relief crew that already worked overtime in Game 1, when Foster Griffin, Daniel Espino, Joey Cantillo, Hunter Gaddis and Erik Sabrowski combined for four scoreless-ish innings before closer Cade Smith locked things down.
Cade Smith has now appeared in all six of Cleveland’s playoff games this postseason. That’s an encouraging sign of reliability, but it’s also a workload red flag if Messick can’t give his team length tonight.
The Rays won five of six regular-season meetings with Cleveland this year, and in four of those five wins, the margin was three runs or fewer.
That’s the context that should temper any overreaction to Monday’s final score. This has been a tight, low-scoring rivalry all season, and Tampa Bay’s pitching staff — Peralta included — has generally had the Guardians’ number. Junior Caminero and Jonny DeLuca got things started with early RBI singles in Game 1 before Cleveland’s offense broke through late, and a lineup that productive shouldn’t be expected to go quiet in back-to-back games at home.
Cedric Mullins provided the Rays’ lone power answer in Game 1 with a solo homer, and Tampa Bay’s lineup top to bottom is built to punish exactly the kind of short start Messick has given in his last two postseason trips to the mound. If Cleveland’s starter can’t find a way to work deeper into games, this series could turn into a bullpen arms race that favors the better-rested team. Tampa Bay has the depth and the extra day of recovery working in its favor tonight.
Tampa Bay gets back on track behind Peralta, who should give the Rays more length and fewer free passes than Rasmussen managed on short rest from the ALDS turnaround. Cleveland’s bullpen depth was the story in Game 1, but asking it to bail out another shaky Messick start two nights in a row is a lot to ask against this lineup. The pick:
Cleveland proved it can win a slugfest, but a series-evening response from the Rays’ best healthy arm feels like the more likely script in Game 2.
