The Philadelphia Eagles head to Chicago as the last unbeaten team on Monday Night Football’s schedule this week, and they’re catching a Bears team that just lost its starting quarterback to injury. Philadelphia (2-0) travels to Soldier Field to face a Chicago squad (1-1) that’s suddenly dealing with a full-blown quarterback crisis, and it’s turned what looked like a competitive early-season measuring stick into one of the more lopsided lines of Week 4.
Kickoff is set for 8:15pm ET on Monday, September 28, broadcast on ESPN/ABC. The Eagles are coming off back-to-back wins over Tennessee and Washington, while the Bears are trying to shake off a sluggish 9-3 loss to the Vikings where the offense never got out of neutral.
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has been ruled out with a Grade 2 hamstring strain, and that news alone is doing most of the heavy lifting on this spread. Chicago’s backup plan isn’t much cleaner — Tyson Bagent is questionable after entering concussion protocol, which means there’s a real chance 38-year-old Case Keenum ends up under center for the Bears on national television.
The spread has settled with Philadelphia favored by around 3.5 to 4 points, with the total sitting in the 41 to 42.5 range. Eagles moneyline pricing has moved into roughly the -180 to -230 range depending on the book, while Chicago sits between +148 and +195. That’s a notable gap for a divisional-caliber quarterback swap, and it reflects just how much oddsmakers are discounting Chicago’s offense without Williams running it.
There’s a strange bit of history baked into this one, too. If Keenum does start, he’ll be facing the same Eagles franchise that eliminated him and the Minnesota Vikings in the 2017 NFC Championship Game. It’s a full-circle moment nobody expected when the Bears’ season started.
Philadelphia’s defensive front is the single biggest reason this line has moved as far as it has. Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis give the Eagles one of the most disruptive interior duos in the league, and that’s a brutal matchup for a Bears offensive line that will already be protecting a backup — or third-string — quarterback under Monday night lights.
The Eagles aren’t fully healthy either. Wide receiver Hollywood Brown is out with an ankle injury, tight end Dallas Goedert is sidelined with a knee issue, and offensive lineman Fred Johnson is out with a knee injury as well. The silver lining: running back Saquon Barkley, who was dealing with a stinger, has been a full participant in practice and is good to go, and wide receiver DeVonta Smith is also fully cleared. Philadelphia also re-signed tight end Zach Ertz, who could make his return in this game — a nice depth boost at a position that just lost its top option.
Chicago has its own issues beyond the quarterback room. Linebacker Noah Sewell is out with an Achilles injury, and defensive lineman Shemar Turner is out with a knee injury, both notable losses for a defense that will need to keep things close if the offense is as limited as expected.
With Barkley expected to carry a heavy workload behind an Eagles offensive line that should have a clear advantage up front, Philadelphia’s game plan likely leans on the ground game to control the clock and keep pressure off whichever quarterback Chicago trots out.
This has the shape of a game the Eagles control from the opening series. Between the Bears’ quarterback situation and Philadelphia’s defensive line advantage, it’s hard to see Chicago sustaining enough offense to keep pace, even at home.
The number accounts for the quarterback change, but not by enough given how banged up Chicago is up front and at the skill positions behind Keenum or Bagent. Philadelphia’s front seven should be able to feast, and Barkley’s workload gives the Eagles a path to cover comfortably rather than needing a shootout to close it out.
