Dodgers vs. Phillies Prediction: Zack Wheeler Gives Philadelphia the Edge on July 21

Zack Wheeler has been nearly untouchable all season, and now he has to be the reason the Phillies survive the best record in baseball.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Philadelphia Phillies -136
  • Why: Zack Wheeler is having a Cy Young-caliber season and gets a Dodgers lineup missing several key bats
  • The number to watch: Wheeler’s 0.89 WHIP and 10.5 K/9 across 93 innings

The Dodgers roll into Citizens Bank Park at 63-38, still the top record in the National League, but they dropped the series opener 10-7 on Monday night after Trea Turner went deep twice — including career homer No. 200 — and Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh both connected as well. Philadelphia is 56-45 and clinging to the No. 2 Wild Card spot, sitting three games back of Atlanta in the NL East, but a series win over the sport’s best team would be exactly the kind of statement this club has been chasing since a rough start to the second half.

This is a rematch of a rivalry that’s carried real weight all year. The Phillies came in just 3-9 against the NL’s other division leaders — Milwaukee, Los Angeles, and Atlanta — entering this series, with Atlanta alone accounting for five of those losses. Beating the Dodgers in this set would be a rare data point in Philadelphia’s favor against the top of the league.

Wheeler Changes the Math on This Line

Books have the Phillies as home favorites at -136 (Dodgers +116), with the total sitting at 8.5 and the run line at Phillies -1.5 (+152) / Dodgers +1.5 (-184). That’s a notably tighter number than you’d expect for a team with a losing run differential hosting the majors’ best record — and it’s almost entirely because of who’s on the mound. Both clubs are also lurking in the World Series futures conversation, which only raises the stakes on a series like this one.

Zack Wheeler (10-1, 2.13 ERA) is making his 16th start of the year and has been one of the toughest outs in baseball to solve: a 0.89 WHIP, 2.1 BB/9, and 10.5 K/9 over 93 innings, with four or fewer hits allowed in five of his last six outings. The Dodgers counter with Eric Lauer (3-0, 3.12 ERA), who has quietly given Philadelphia trouble in his career — just 3 earned runs allowed over 29 innings against the Phillies — but his overall body of work (1.28 WHIP, 5.5 K/9) doesn’t match Wheeler’s.

A Lineup the Dodgers Can’t Fully Deploy

Los Angeles still leads MLB in run differential at plus-155 and is averaging 5.17 runs per game, powered by Shohei Ohtani (.290/.398/.540, 22 homers) batting leadoff, Freddie Freeman hitting .285 with 15 homers, and Trea Edman quietly running a .355 average out of the nine-hole. But this isn’t a full-strength Dodgers roster. Ohtani was pulled from his throwing rotation indefinitely on Sunday due to lingering left knee soreness, meaning L.A. is down a starter and can’t lean on his bat-and-arm workload management the way it has all year. Catcher Will Smith remains out until at least mid-August with neck inflammation, and both Blake Snell and Tyler Glasnow are still working back from injury with no return before August.

Philadelphia’s issues are concentrated in the bullpen. Setup man Brad Keller was lost for the season to a UCL tear just before the second half began, joining Tanner Banks (forearm) and Lou Trivino (back spasm) on the injured list — a thin relief corps that could be tested if this game turns into the slugfest Monday’s opener was. Bryce Harper has also cooled significantly, hitting just .157 in July with only eight hits and 19 strikeouts over his last 14 starts.

Wheeler has allowed four or fewer hits in five of his last six starts and gone at least six innings in 12 of his last 14.

That kind of length matters against a Dodgers lineup built to grind out at-bats. If Wheeler is working into the seventh and eighth again, Los Angeles simply doesn’t see enough pitches from Philadelphia’s shakier bullpen arms to make up for whatever damage they don’t do against him. Kyle Schwarber (.253/.368/.561, 33 homers) and Bryce Harper still give Philadelphia thump of its own against a Dodgers pitching staff that, without Ohtani, Snell, or Glasnow, is leaning heavily on names further down the depth chart.

Prediction and Best Bet

Wheeler is the best pitcher on the mound in this series, full stop, and he’s doing it against a Dodgers team missing multiple key contributors. Philadelphia’s offense doesn’t need to be spectacular — it needs Wheeler to do what he’s done all season, and the Under 8.5 is also worth a look given both starters’ recent form.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Phillies 4, Dodgers 3
  2. Best Bet: Phillies on the moneyline

Fade the Dodgers’ name value here — Wheeler at home is too strong a matchup to pass up, even against the sport’s best record.
