Dodgers Land Tarik Skubal in Blockbuster Trade With Tigers, Sending World Series Odds Plunging

The Los Angeles Dodgers have finalized a blockbuster trade to acquire two-time reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline. Detroit receives a three-player prospect package in outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handers River Ryan and Brady Smith in exchange for the left-hander, who becomes a rental for the stretch run and the postseason.

The move ends Skubal’s nine-year run in the Tigers organization, a stretch that began when Detroit drafted him in the ninth round out of Seattle University back in 2018. Skubal, 29, is under club control only through the end of this season and is set to become a free agent this winter, with contract talks between the two sides having gone nowhere before the deadline. The Tigers and Skubal reportedly filed roughly $13 million apart during arbitration this year, a gap that made a split feel close to inevitable once Detroit’s playoff picture grew murky.

Trade Details and What Detroit Gets Back

Detroit’s return centers on Hope, MLB Pipeline’s No. 25 overall prospect and the Dodgers’ No. 5 system prospect, along with Ryan, Los Angeles’ No. 7 prospect, and Smith, a 21-year-old right-hander who ranked No. 17 in the Dodgers’ farm system. The trio slots in as significant reinforcements for a Tigers system that just lost its unquestioned centerpiece. Hope and Ryan immediately become two of Detroit’s top prospects, while Smith, a third-round pick in 2023, has posted a 3.88 ERA with 104 strikeouts across 65 innings in Single-A this season.

Skubal is making a record $32 million this season after an arbitration panel sided with him over Detroit’s lower offer, and the Dodgers will now be on the hook for the remainder of that salary. Before the trade became official, Skubal gave an emotional sendoff to the only organization he’d ever known, recounting his path from a ninth-round pick to a two-time Cy Young winner while fighting back tears. Just days earlier, he’d received a standing ovation from a crowd of 34,406 at Comerica Park after recording his 1,000th career strikeout, a franchise record for fewest innings needed to reach the milestone, breaking a mark previously held by Max Scherzer.

Skubal’s Case as Baseball’s Best Pitcher

The numbers explain why this trade registered as a landscape-shifting move rather than a minor deadline transaction. Skubal enters the Dodgers rotation with a career 3.07 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and 973 strikeouts across 837.1 innings, and he’s coming off back-to-back American League Cy Young seasons in which he posted a 2.39 ERA in 2024 and a 2.21 ERA in 2025 while leading all qualified pitchers in strikeout rate, WHIP and opponents’ batting average since returning from 2022 Tommy John surgery. This season he’s been 5-4 with a 3.06 ERA and 84 strikeouts against just 10 walks over 70.2 innings, numbers that made him the most coveted rental on the trade market by a wide margin.

How the Betting Market Reacted

Oddsmakers moved fast once the deal was reported. The Dodgers’ 2026 World Series price tightened from roughly +170 before the All-Star break down into the +140 to +150 range across multiple sportsbooks in the immediate aftermath, pushing Los Angeles’ implied championship probability to around 40 percent as it chases a third consecutive title. Prediction markets reacted even before traditional books finished adjusting, with the Dodgers’ win probability climbing into the low 40s and the Milwaukee Brewers, the other reported finalist for Skubal and owners of the best record in baseball, seeing their own number slide as a result of losing out on the pitcher twice over in the same transaction.

The gap between Los Angeles and the field is now stark. The Yankees sit a distant second in most updated futures boards, with teams like the Brewers, Braves and Rays rounding out the next tier well behind the new favorites. For bettors who already held Dodgers futures tickets, this trade represents a meaningful value jump without having to place a new wager. For those considering the market now, the shortened price reflects just how much rotation depth a healthy, dominant Skubal adds to a club that was already the sport’s deepest roster. On the other side of the deal, Detroit’s postseason odds, already fading before the trade given a below-.500 record and a crowded AL Central and Wild Card picture, take another hit with the subtraction of an ace-caliber arm from the rotation, even as the prospect return sets up the next phase of the Tigers’ roster build.
