The Chicago Cubs have already punched their playoff ticket, but a weekend sweep at Fenway Park would be a brutal way to close out the regular season.
Quick take:
- Pick: Boston Red Sox moneyline
- Why: The Red Sox have already taken the first two games of this series and Chicago’s offense has gone cold at the worst time
- The number to watch: The Cubs are just 17-for-40 (-26% ROI) against the moneyline in their last 40 games
Both clubs are locked into the postseason as Wild Card entrants, which strips a bit of urgency out of this series finale, but pride and momentum still matter heading into October. Chicago (88-73) sits second in the NL Central at 13.5 games back of Milwaukee and has dropped two straight, while Boston (87-74) has quietly won its last two series and is looking to complete the sweep in this abbreviated three-game set.
The Cubs clinched their playoff spot on September 24 against Miami, the same night Pete Crow-Armstrong swiped his 40th stolen base to join the exclusive 40-40 club. That’s the good news for Chicago. The bad news is they’ve dropped both games here at Fenway by a combined 6-3 margin, and the offense that led all of baseball in OPS this season has produced just three runs across those two games.
Oddsmakers have Chicago as a slight favorite at -120 on the moneyline with Boston sitting at +102, and the run total is set at 6.5. That line feels light given how thoroughly the Red Sox pitching staff has handled the Cubs lineup this series, and the spread — Chicago -1.5 (+142) versus Boston +1.5 (-172) — suggests the market still expects a competitive, low-scoring finish at Fenway. Bettors weighing a moneyline play on the road dog might want to shop lines with a DraftKings promo code before first pitch.

| Chicago Cubs | -1.5 (135) | -120 | O 7.5 (-108) |
| Boston Red Sox | +1.5 (-170) | +106 | U 7.5 (-110) |
Chicago’s bats have stalled at the wrong time, while Boston has found its rhythm against a lineup that led the majors in scoring for much of the summer.

Pete Crow-Armstrong has been the story of the Cubs’ season, finishing with 45 home runs, a .278 average and a .942 OPS while becoming the first player in franchise history to reach the 40-40 club. But this series has exposed how much Chicago leans on him and Pedro Ramirez to carry the offense. Nico Hoerner, normally a steady table-setter, is hitting just .264 with a .321 OBP, and the supporting cast around Crow-Armstrong has gone dry against a Boston staff that ranks third in the majors in team ERA at 3.55.
On the mound, the Cubs are expected to give the ball to a starter who’s made only one big-league appearance, a 6.00 ERA look that offers little margin against a lineup that’s found timely hits all series. Boston, meanwhile, will counter with a starter carrying a 5.07 ERA of his own — so neither side has its ace lined up for the finale, which puts even more weight on the bullpens.
The Cubs have hit the moneyline in just 17 of their last 40 games, a stretch that’s cost backers -26% ROI.
That kind of run isn’t a coincidence. Chicago’s offense, which ranked first in the majors in runs per game (5.24) and OPS (.765) for most of 2026, has cooled significantly down the stretch — and Fenway’s quirks haven’t helped. Boston’s staff, anchored all year by Sonny Gray’s 2.72 ERA, has done exactly what good pitching staffs do in September: slow down a hot lineup and force it to beat you in small ball. Willson Contreras’ hand injury has only made things tougher for a Boston lineup that’s had to lean on Wilyer Abreu (24 homers) and Ceddanne Rafaela (.282, a team-best 152 hits) to generate offense, and both have delivered against their former team’s rival all series.
There’s also the matter of Fenway Park itself. The Green Monster and the quirky dimensions have played a role in the first two games of this series, and Boston’s roster is built to take advantage of them in ways a visiting lineup can’t always replicate. Chicago’s approach, built around pull-heavy power from Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman, hasn’t translated the way it did at Wrigley Field this summer.
With Chicago already looking ahead to the Wild Card round and Boston playing with a bit of a chip on its shoulder after years of near-misses, expect the home crowd at Fenway to have plenty to cheer about in this finale. The Cubs’ offense has shown no signs of waking up, and Boston’s bullpen depth should be enough to close this series out.
The pick:
