The Cubs have already won this series, but Chicago’s bullpen is banged up enough that Washington still has a real shot at stealing the finale behind one of the better arms in baseball nobody’s talking about.
Quick take:
- Pick: Nationals +1.5
- Why: Cade Cavalli has been better than Kevin Gausman all season, and Washington’s lineup is red-hot against right-handed pitching
- The number to watch: Cavalli’s 3.57 ERA is nearly three-quarters of a run better than Gausman’s 4.29
Chicago (71-50) rolls into the series finale at Nationals Park still holding a comfortable cushion in the NL Central race, while Washington (59-63) is playing out the string with a roster that’s shown real fight lately even without much to play for in the standings. The Cubs won the first two games of this set, but this isn’t a mismatch on paper — it’s closer to a coin flip with the Nats getting a modest number of runs on the board.
Why the Number Says Coin Flip, Not Blowout
Books have Chicago as a moneyline favorite in the -134 to -140 range depending on the shop, but the run line tells the real story: Cubs -1.5 sits around +117 to +125, meaning the market isn’t confident Chicago wins by more than a run. That’s a significant tell for a team that’s supposed to be the class of this matchup. The total sits at 8.5, split roughly even between the over and under, which lines up with two lineups that both hit for pop but neither burying opponents in runs on a nightly basis.

Recent Form
Chicago has won four of its last five, but Washington has actually matched that pace at 3-2 over its own last five, snapping a nasty stretch with some big offensive nights of its own. Neither team is walking in cold.

The Pitching Matchup Actually Favors Washington
This is where the pick gets interesting. Kevin Gausman is 6-10 with a 4.29 ERA this season — solid strikeout stuff (131 K in 134.1 innings) but he’s allowed 16 home runs and walked 37 batters, and his career numbers (3.85 ERA over 385 games) suggest this year has been a genuine step back. Cade Cavalli, on the other hand, is quietly having a breakout season for a Nationals team with little else to show for 2026: 9-5, a 3.57 ERA, and 141 strikeouts in 128.2 innings, a better strikeout rate than Gausman with fewer walks allowed proportionally.
Washington’s lineup gives Cavalli plenty of thump behind him. James Wood is hitting .265 with 30 home runs and a .928 OPS, and CJ Abrams has been arguably the hottest hitter in the sport over the past month — he’s slashing .286 with 29 homers and 89 RBIs, having authored a stretch in late July where he went 17-for-30 with seven homers in seven games. Chicago counters with its own thunder: Pete Crow-Armstrong is chasing a 30-30 season at .285 with 27 homers and 30 steals, and Seiya Suzuki has 20 homers of his own with an .841 OPS.
Cavalli’s 3.57 ERA is the best number by either starter in this game, full stop.
That gap matters more than the standings suggest. Chicago’s bullpen has also taken real hits — Daniel Palencia, Hoby Milner, Phil Maton, Shelby Miller and Gavin Hollowell are all currently sidelined, which thins out Craig Counsell’s options if Gausman doesn’t work deep into the game. A rough middle relief stretch is exactly the kind of thing that lets a scrappy, streaking lineup like Washington’s hang around into the late innings and cover a run and a half.
Prediction and Best Bet
Chicago’s still the better team overall, and its lineup should be able to produce enough against Cavalli to win the game outright. But with a shaky bullpen behind Gausman and Washington’s bats clicking, this profiles as a tight one that Chicago wins by a run rather than the Cubs cruising.
The pick:
- Prediction: Cubs 5, Nationals 4
- Best Bet: Nationals +1.5
Take the number over the moneyline here — Cavalli gives Washington a real chance to keep this within a run, and that’s the value in this one.
