Colorado State Fires DC Tyson Summers Mid-Game as Rams Defense Collapses in 56-26 Loss to Oregon State, Clouding Already-Shaky Bowl Odds

Colorado State dismissed defensive coordinator Tyson Summers in the middle of Saturday’s 56-26 loss to Oregon State, with head coach Jim Mora confirming afterward that Summers is “no longer with this football program.” The move came in the Rams’ Pac-12 debut in front of a homecoming crowd at Canvas Stadium, and it has immediately reshaped the outside expectations around a program already on shaky footing.

Mora, in his first season leading Colorado State, said he relieved Summers of his defensive play-calling duties in the first half after Oregon State raced out to an early lead. Summers then left the sideline on his own, according to Mora, who called the departure permanent. “Tyson was relieved of his play-calling duties,” Mora told reporters. “He left the field, and he’s no longer with this football program.” Co-defensive coordinator Kenny McClendon took over play-calling for the remainder of the game — his first call as the unit’s primary voice reportedly produced a sack and forced fumble.

A Defense in Freefall Forces Mora’s Hand

The numbers explain why Mora acted mid-game rather than waiting until Monday. Oregon State finished with 727 total yards, the most in program history, averaging 10.2 yards per play against a Colorado State defense that has now allowed 41-plus points in three consecutive losses. The Rams had already surrendered 115-plus combined points over their previous two games before Saturday’s blowout. Summers, who took over as Colorado State’s interim head coach for the final five games of last season after Jay Norvell was fired, was retained by Mora when he arrived from UConn to rebuild the program. That retention is now undone less than halfway through year one.

The in-game firing did not come out of nowhere. The week before, in a loss to UTSA, Mora and Summers were seen in a heated sideline exchange, a sign of mounting tension between the first-year head coach and the coordinator he inherited. Colorado State now sits at 2-3 overall and 0-1 in Pac-12 play, heading into a bye week before a Thursday night road trip to Texas State on October 15.

What It Means for Colorado State’s Betting Market

Colorado State’s preseason win total opened at 3.5 games, already a modest bar for a roster navigating a coaching transition and a new conference. Reaching bowl eligibility at six wins would require the Rams to go a near-perfect 4-1 or better over their final five games against a schedule that includes Wyoming, UTSA, Texas State, Utah State, Washington State and Fresno State — and that was before Saturday’s defensive collapse and the loss of the coordinator who had been calling that side of the ball. A unit that just conceded a program-record yardage total to Oregon State, now being handed to a new play-caller on short notice, is not a profile that inspires confidence in covering spreads or clearing win totals the rest of the way.

Markets tend to move fastest on programs with visible instability, and an in-season coordinator firing after a historically bad defensive performance is about as visible as it gets. With Colorado State idle this week before the Thursday night window at Texas State, oddsmakers and bettors alike will be watching closely to see whether McClendon’s defense looks any different in its first full week of preparation under the new structure, or whether the same yardage and scoring trends that led to Summers’ exit continue to define the Rams’ season.
