Canadiens vs. Lightning Game 2 Prediction: 2026 NHL Playoffs

Tampa Bay hosts Montreal in Game 2 after Slafkovsky's hat trick gave the Canadiens a stunning Game 1 overtime win.
Cayden Dobes

The Montreal Canadiens came into Tampa Bay and stole Game 1 in overtime, and now the Lightning must regroup at Amalie Arena for Game 2 on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM ET. Juraj Slafkovsky was the story of Game 1 in a way few players are in any playoff game — he scored a hat trick on three power play goals, capping it with the overtime winner at 1:22 of the extra frame. Tampa Bay jumped out to a lead and had its moments, but the Canadiens kept competing and then took over when it mattered most.

Montreal enters Game 2 in an enviable position. The Canadiens finished 48-24-10 and their road record of 24-9-8 is exceptional — this is genuinely one of the better road teams in hockey, not a squad that is uncomfortable playing away from home. Tampa Bay at 50-26-6 is a legitimate powerhouse with a 26-14-1 home record, but they squandered their home advantage in Game 1 and now face a deficit in the series.

Lightning Open as Significant Home Favorites

Tampa Bay is installed as -180 favorites for Game 2, with Montreal getting +150 on the moneyline. The puck line of -1.5 for the Lightning offers +136, suggesting the market expects Tampa to win convincingly if they win at all. The over/under sits at 6.5, reasonable given what we saw in Game 1. At -180, backing the Lightning is a sizable investment, but the combination of home ice, Andrei Vasilevskiy in net, and Tampa’s historically aggressive response to playoff adversity makes it defensible.

Can Vasilevskiy and Tampa’s Stars Respond?

The goaltending split is the most important factor to understand here. Andrei Vasilevskiy finished the regular season at 39-15-4 with a 2.31 GAA and .912 save percentage — he is one of the best playoff goalies of his generation and typically elevates when the stakes rise. Cayden Dobes was solid for Montreal in Game 1 at 29-10-4 with a 2.78 GAA and .901 save percentage, but the gap between these two goalies in playoff experience and big-game performance is substantial.

Tampa Bay’s offense has the firepower to take over this series. Nikita Kucherov finished the regular season with 130 points on 44 goals and 86 assists and is playing like the best player on the ice in most games he takes the ice. Brayden Point is one of the most dangerous playoff performers in the sport, and Jake Guentzel recorded three assists in Game 1. Brandon Hagel scored twice. The production was there for Tampa — they just gave up too many power play goals.

Montreal’s power play was the difference in Game 1, converting three times. The Lightning’s penalty kill operates at 82.6%, which is solid but clearly had a bad night. Tampa will clean that up in Game 2, and the Canadiens’ penalty kill of 78.2% is a vulnerability that Point, Kucherov, and company will look to exploit. Tampa’s power play at 20.7% has room to do damage.

Slafkovsky is a dynamic young talent and his Game 1 performance was special, but back-to-back hat tricks in a playoff series are exceptionally rare. Montreal will need collective contributions rather than another singular hero performance to steal Game 2 on the road.

Prediction and Best Bet

Tampa Bay responds at home. Vasilevskiy is too good to be beaten the same way twice in a row, the Lightning will be more disciplined with their penalties, and the offensive firepower on this roster is too much for the Canadiens to contain over a full 60 minutes at Amalie Arena. The crowd will be energized and Tampa plays some of their best hockey when they need a response win.

  • Prediction: Lightning 4, Canadiens 2
  • Best Bet: Lightning -180 moneyline

The price is significant at -180 but the situation strongly favors Tampa Bay. They have the better goaltender, the deeper star power, home ice advantage, and a track record of bouncing back in playoff series. Montreal played brilliantly in Game 1 and will not replicate a three-goal power play performance. Vasilevskiy shuts things down, Tampa’s offense gets going, and the Lightning even the series.
