Can the Ducks Pull Off Another Upset? Oilers vs Ducks Game 2 Prediction

Anaheim kept Game 1 competitive before Edmonton escaped with a 4-3 win. Can the Ducks pull off the upset again in Game 2 at Rogers Place, or will McDavid and Draisaitl take over?
Evander Kane

The Edmonton Oilers were supposed to handle the Anaheim Ducks without much drama. Through one game of this first-round series, the Ducks have other ideas. Game 2 goes tonight at 10 PM ET on TBS from Rogers Place in Edmonton, and the question everyone is asking is whether Anaheim can replicate their spirited performance from Game 1 — or whether Edmonton reasserts itself as the powerhouse they are supposed to be.

Game 1 Recap

Edmonton won the series opener 4-3, but it was far from comfortable. Troy Terry was sensational for Anaheim, recording 2 goals and 1 assist in a game the Ducks kept competitive until the final buzzer. The Oilers left Rogers Place with the win but not with the blowout anyone expected given the talent gap on paper.

The Ducks are a young team with nothing to lose — exactly the kind of opponent that can be dangerous in a short playoff series. Anaheim finished the regular season at 43-33-6, earning the #3 Pacific seed in what was a rebuilding year. They are playing loose, confident, and with energy. Edmonton at 41-30-11 is the established Stanley Cup contender that has been here before — but that experience cuts both ways.

Tonight’s Odds

The books have seen enough from both teams to install Edmonton as a sizable favorite for Game 2.

Edmonton -182, Anaheim +150. The over/under sits at 6.5 with the over at -148, reflecting the offensive firepower on both sides. Roughly 90% of the bets and money are on Edmonton, which tells you where the public stands.

McDavid and Draisaitl vs the World

Connor McDavid is widely considered the best player in the world, and Leon Draisaitl is one of the most productive playoff performers of his generation. Together they give Edmonton a 1-2 punch that essentially no team in the NHL can match. Draisaitl is historically excellent in the playoffs — he tends to elevate his game when the stakes are highest. Zach Hyman, Evander Kane, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins give the Oilers dangerous depth beyond their star duo.

Edmonton posted 3.44 goals per game this season and their penalty kill has been elite at 90.9%. The Anaheim powerplay (19.3%) will need to be excellent to keep pace.

Can the Ducks Keep It Going?

Troy Terry proved in Game 1 that Anaheim has a player capable of taking over a game. Trevor Zegras is a skilled passer who can create problems for any defense. Mason McTavish, Sam Gauthier, Frank Vatrano, and Leo Carlsson give the Ducks genuine depth. Anaheim’s PK at 89.5% has also been solid, which could be a factor against McDavid’s power play unit.

The Ducks play with nothing to lose, and that mentality is genuinely hard to defend against. But sustaining the level they showed in Game 1 over a full 60 minutes in front of an Edmonton crowd hungry for a decisive win is a tall order.

Prediction and Best Bet

The Oilers are the better team, full stop. McDavid and Draisaitl are too much for Anaheim to contain over a full playoff game, Rogers Place will be loud, and Edmonton will be motivated after nearly being embarrassed in Game 1. The Ducks gave them a scare and showed they belong, but the Oilers are going to lock in tonight.

  • Prediction: Oilers 5, Ducks 2
  • Best Bet: Oilers moneyline (-182)

The -182 price is steep but justified. McDavid has a point to prove, Draisaitl will be a force, and Anaheim cannot sustain the same energy that carried them in Game 1. Edmonton reasserts control of this series at home tonight.
