Browns Activate QB Dillon Gabriel From Injured Reserve, Waive TE Carsen Ryan as Cleveland Eyes AFC North Lead

The Cleveland Browns have activated quarterback Dillon Gabriel from injured reserve, ending a stay on the list that began before Week 1. To open a spot on the 53-man roster, Cleveland waived rookie tight end Carsen Ryan. The move keeps all four of the team’s quarterbacks on the active roster as the Browns, now 5-2 and atop the AFC North, prepare for a Week 8 trip to Pittsburgh.

For readers new to roster language, injured reserve (IR) is a list where a team parks hurt players so they stop counting against the 53-man limit. A player on IR with a “designated to return” tag has a 21-day window to practice before the team must either add him back to the active roster or leave him on IR. When a player is waived, he is released, and the other 31 teams get a chance to claim him. If nobody does, he becomes a free agent, and the original team can often sign him to its practice squad.

What Happened With Gabriel and Ryan

Gabriel went on injured reserve with a back injury at the end of August, when the Browns trimmed their roster to 53 players. Cleveland designated him to return, which opened his 21-day practice window roughly three weeks ago. That window reached its end this week, forcing the decision the team announced Monday.

Gabriel was a third-round pick in 2025. In 10 career games, six of them starts, he has completed 110 of 185 passes for 937 yards and seven touchdowns. He has not taken a regular-season snap in 2026, and the Browns have not announced a specific role for him in Week 8.

Ryan, a seventh-round pick (No. 248 overall) out of BYU in this year’s draft, appeared in six games for Cleveland after making the roster. His departure leaves the Browns thin at tight end, with Harold Fannin Jr. and Blake Whiteheart the only two tight ends left on the active roster. Because Ryan was waived, he is exposed to claims from other teams. Reports out of Cleveland indicate the Browns would likely try to bring him back on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

The Browns’ Quarterback Pecking Order

Nothing about the depth chart changes at the top. Deshaun Watson remains the starter and has led Cleveland to a 5-2 record, including Sunday’s 27-24 comeback win over the Tennessee Titans. Shedeur Sanders stays the No. 2 and the expected game-day backup. Gabriel slots third, with sixth-round rookie Taylen Green fourth. Sanders started seven games as a rookie in 2025 and finished with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

That makes Gabriel a depth piece rather than a candidate to move up. Teams typically dress only two or three quarterbacks on game day, so at least one of Cleveland’s four will be inactive each week. Carrying four also raises an obvious question about whether a trade or another roster cut follows later, though the team has said nothing publicly about that.

What It Means for the Betting Market

On its own, this transaction is unlikely to move a line. Bettors price the Browns off Watson, and the market has no reason to adjust for the third quarterback on the depth chart. The bigger betting story is how far Cleveland has come against expectations.

Before the season, the Browns were one of the least-respected teams in the AFC. Their win total opened the summer at 5.5, with the Over priced at -125 on September 1, and they were listed at -850 to miss the playoffs and +2100 to win the AFC North. At 5-2, they are already within one win of clearing that 5.5 number with ten games still to play.

The futures market has caught up in part but not fully. Prediction market pricing on Kalshi as of October 26 had Cleveland at about 35 percent to make the playoffs and 14 percent to win the AFC North. A sportsbook snapshot from October 20 showed the Browns at +650 to win the division and +12500 to win the Super Bowl, with moneyline +166 and a 3.5-point underdog spread for their next game against Pittsburgh at that time. Those numbers are a reminder that a 5-2 record has not erased preseason skepticism about an offense that ranked last in the league in yards per play in 2025.

The Steelers game on November 1 is the one to watch. Pittsburgh is also 5-2, so the winner takes sole possession of first place in the division heading into the Week 9 bye. If Cleveland wins, expect the division and playoff numbers to move noticeably. If Watson struggles or gets hurt, the quarterback depth chart behind him suddenly matters much more, and that is the scenario in which Gabriel’s activation becomes relevant to the market. Until then, it is a roster housekeeping move with a story attached.

For newer bettors, the takeaway is simple: transactions like this one matter most when they touch a starter or a key position. Watching who is active behind a quarterback is useful context, but an injury to the starter, not a change in the third-string spot, is what actually changes a line.
