Washington got run off a court it built for itself in the fourth quarter of Game 1, and now the Mystics have to solve the Dream all over again on their own floor with the season hanging on it.
Quick take:
- Pick: Atlanta Dream -3.5
- Why: Atlanta’s defense forced 22 turnovers into 27 points in Game 1 and Washington hasn’t shown it can fix that in a 72-hour turnaround
- The number to watch: 16 steals — Atlanta’s franchise playoff record set in Game 1
The Dream, seeded fourth, are one win from closing out the fifth-seeded Mystics after a 92-77 victory in Game 1 that looked nothing like a laugher at halftime. Washington led by 11 points in the second quarter and was up 41-36 at the break behind Sonia Citron’s 25 points, only to get outscored 56-36 the rest of the way as Atlanta’s ball pressure took over. Now the series shifts to Washington’s CareFirst Arena for Game 2, and the Mystics are trying to become the first team since their own 2019 championship group to win a playoff game in this building.
Why the Line Barely Moved Off a Blowout
Books opened Atlanta as roughly a 3.5-point road favorite for Game 2 with the total sitting at 164.5, a modest number given the Dream just won by 15. That’s a nod to how competitive the first three quarters actually were and to Washington’s home-court value — the Mystics went 15-7 at home during the regular season and have won nine of their last 11 games overall. Anyone stacking a same-game parlay around this line might run the numbers through a betting calculator before locking in a spread-and-total combo. The market is pricing in a correction, not a repeat rout, and with Atlanta now the favorite on the road, the number still reflects real respect for what Washington did for a half in Game 1.

Turnovers Are the Whole Ballgame
Washington’s issue in Game 1 wasn’t shot-making — Citron went 8-of-15 with 25 points and Kiki Iriafen posted a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, nine of them offensive. The issue was live-ball turnovers turning directly into Atlanta buckets in transition. Jordin Canada ran the show with 10 points and 11 assists once the Dream started getting out in the open floor, and Allisha Gray added 22 points as Atlanta’s off-ball scoring punch. Rhyne Howard was the closer, scoring 10 of her 26 points in the fourth quarter alone after going a modest 7-of-18 from the field for most of the night — she just made every free throw she took, going a perfect 10-for-10.
Washington committed 22 turnovers in Game 1, and Atlanta converted them into 27 points — nearly a third of the Dream’s entire output.
That’s the number Washington has to fix, and it’s mostly about composure, not scheme. Shakira Austin held her own inside with 12 points and 16 rebounds, proving the Mystics can win the battle in the paint against a smaller Atlanta frontcourt. Angel Reese struggled shooting the ball in Game 1, hitting just 4 of 15 attempts, but she still grabbed 12 rebounds for her first career playoff double-double — a sign the Dream can win ugly on the glass even on an off shooting night from their leading rebounder.
If Washington tightens up ball security and gets more size minutes from Austin and Iriafen against Reese, this is a genuine coin flip. If the turnovers repeat, Atlanta’s steal-and-score identity travels just fine on the road.
Prediction and Best Bet
Atlanta’s defensive pressure is the more repeatable half of what happened in Game 1 — shooting slumps for Reese and Howard can reverse, but forcing 22 turnovers against a team that hadn’t shown that vulnerability much all season says more about persistent habits than one bad night. Expect Washington to play with tighter possessions early, but the Dream’s activity level should still win them the turnover battle and, with it, the game.
The pick:
- Prediction: Atlanta Dream 88, Washington Mystics 81
- Best Bet: Atlanta Dream on the spread
Atlanta doesn’t need a repeat blowout to close this one out — just another night of live-ball takeaways, and the Dream can put this series firmly in their control heading back home.
