Atlanta doesn’t need its best scorer to be the best team on the floor right now, and Game 2 is the proving ground.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Atlanta Dream -1.5
  • Why: The Dream’s defense forced 21 turnovers in Game 1 even with Allisha Gray hurt, and that pressure doesn’t need her on the floor to work.
  • The number to watch: 32 points off 21 Liberty turnovers in Game 1 — the margin of victory, essentially, built entirely off Atlanta’s ball pressure.

The No. 4 seed Dream took Game 1 of this WNBA semifinal series 92-82 on Sunday, and they did it the hard way — star guard Allisha Gray, their leading scorer and a four-time All-Star, went down with a hand injury just 11 minutes into the game and never came back. Atlanta’s response was Jordin Canada scoring 20 of her 25 points after halftime, five steals, and a suffocating third quarter that turned a tied game into a laugher.

Now Gray is officially out again for Game 2, and the Liberty — the No. 8 seed that pulled off the first 1-over-8 upset in WNBA playoff history by sweeping the Minnesota Lynx — need to prove Game 1 wasn’t a fluke against a shorthanded opponent. A loss here puts New York in a 2-0 hole in this best-of-five, a near-impossible spot in a series where Atlanta also controls Game 5 if it gets there.

This is the first semifinals appearance for Atlanta since 2018, and the home crowd at Gateway Center Arena showed up accordingly for Game 1. New York, meanwhile, is riding an improbable run — eliminating the No. 1 seed Lynx in just two games to get here — and has nothing left to lose by comparison. That contrast in stakes and momentum is part of what makes this such an interesting Game 2, even with the health report tilted toward Atlanta.

Why the Number Hasn’t Moved Much Despite the Gray News

Books have Atlanta favored again, but not by a wide margin — lines have ranged from Dream -1.5 to -3.5 depending on the shop, with the moneyline sitting around -128 for Atlanta and +104 to +135 for New York. The total has settled in the 170-173 range. That’s a notably tighter number than you’d expect for a team that just won by 10 and is getting a repeat dose of a double-digit-injured opponent missing its top scorer — a sign the market still respects what Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart showed in Game 1, even in a loss.

Depth Is Doing the Heavy Lifting for Atlanta

Gray’s absence should, in theory, open the door for New York’s backcourt to dictate pace. Ionescu torched Atlanta for 27 points on 10-of-20 shooting in Game 1, and Stewart added 19 points and nine rebounds despite battling foul trouble. The problem for New York wasn’t generating their own offense — it was everything Atlanta did defensively in the possessions between those buckets. The Dream’s role players stepped up directly into the vacuum Gray left: DeWanna Bonner, the veteran midseason signing, delivered 23 points and nine rebounds, while Rhyne Howard has averaged 19 points a game across Atlanta’s three playoff wins.

Canada is the one New York has to find an answer for. She’s averaging 18 points, 8.3 assists and 3.3 steals through the playoffs, and her second-half eruption in Game 1 came almost entirely in transition off Liberty turnovers — the exact pattern Atlanta will try to force again.

Atlanta scored 32 of its 92 points directly off 21 forced Liberty turnovers in Game 1 — more than a third of their offense came from defense alone.

That’s the blueprint. If the Liberty can tighten up ball security and make the Dream win in a halfcourt setting, this swings back toward New York’s two All-NBA-caliber scorers. If Atlanta forces anywhere close to 21 turnovers again, it likely doesn’t matter who’s drawing up Atlanta’s offense — the extra possessions will be enough.

Jonquel Jones is the other name worth tracking for New York. She’s been a steadying interior presence for the Liberty all postseason, and if Atlanta’s size advantage starts to wear on her inside, that’s another avenue for the Dream to pull away in the second half the way they did in Game 1. For bettors shopping around, checking live sports betting odds before kickoff is worth it given how much the numbers have moved between books on this one.

New York’s path back into this series realistically runs through pace. Slow it down, win the turnover battle, and let Ionescu and Stewart operate in space — that’s the formula that got them 82 points in a loss. Speed it up and let Atlanta live in transition, and Wednesday starts to look a lot like Sunday.

Prediction and Best Bet

Gray being out again is real downside for Atlanta’s ceiling, but Game 1 already answered the question of whether this team can win without her — it just did, convincingly, against a Liberty team that got 27 and 19 from its two stars. New York has to fix the turnover problem on the road at a building that was rocking for a series opener, and that’s a tall ask in a win-or-fall-behind-2-0 spot.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Atlanta Dream 88, New York Liberty 81
  2. Best Bet: Atlanta Dream -1.5

Lay the short number with the team that’s already proven it can win this matchup shorthanded.
