The team that had no business still playing baseball walks into the house that swept the Yankees, and somebody’s going to blink first.
Quick take:
- Pick: Rays -1.5
- Why: Drew Rasmussen hasn’t lost a start since the All-Star break, and Cleveland is throwing a Game 1 starter who wasn’t even a lock for the rotation a week ago
- The number to watch: Junior Caminero’s 42 home runs, tied for second-most in the American League
Cleveland arrives at Tropicana Field still riding the emotional wave of one of the wildest comebacks in recent postseason memory, erasing an 0-2 hole to beat the White Sox in five games and becoming just the 11th team ever to survive that deficit in a best-of-five. Tampa Bay, meanwhile, has been sitting on its hands since sweeping the Yankees in the ALDS, fully rested and waiting for an opponent.
That contrast in schedules is the whole story heading into Game 1. The Rays finished 98-64 and claimed the American League’s No. 1 seed, while the Guardians snuck in at 85-77 and needed every ounce of their late-season surge just to get here. Tampa Bay also owned the regular-season series, winning five of six meetings, and holds home-field advantage for every potential Game 6 and 7 if this goes the distance.
Why Vegas Isn’t Buying the Cinderella Story
Oddsmakers have installed the Rays as solid favorites, with Tampa Bay sitting around -170 to -174 on the moneyline and Cleveland getting plus money in the +139 to +144 range. Check the live MLB odds for the latest line movement before first pitch. The run line has the Rays favored at -1.5, and the total is hovering between 6.5 and 7 runs. Much of that gap traces directly to the mound: Drew Rasmussen takes the ball for Tampa Bay off a near no-hitter against the Yankees in the Wild Card round, and he hasn’t dropped a start since the All-Star Game. Cleveland, by contrast, is turning to Foster Griffin — a lefty the club acquired off waivers from the Nationals back on Aug. 3 — because aces Gavin Williams and Parker Messick aren’t lined up to pitch until later in the series.

The Lineup That Could Decide This Series
Tampa Bay’s offense runs through a top three that manager Kevin Cash reshuffled in late June, and it paid off immediately. Yandy Díaz led the American League with 180 hits and hit .293 in the leadoff spot, Jonathan Aranda chipped in 159 hits and 92 RBIs from the No. 2 hole, and Junior Caminero has turned into one of the most dangerous bats in the sport, tying for second in the AL with 42 home runs and driving in 101 runs while slugging .524. Caminero, ironically, started his pro career in Cleveland’s farm system before being dealt to Tampa Bay in a 2021 trade that now looks historically lopsided in the Rays’ favor.
Cleveland’s counterpunch starts with José Ramírez, who delivered the signature moment of the ALDS — a two-run homer in Game 5 that stood as the only runs of the game and completed the comeback. He’s hit safely in three straight games and is 9-for-39 with two homers over his last 10. Steven Kwan leads off for the Guardians with a .282 average, 21 doubles and a four-game hitting streak of his own, giving Cleveland at least two hitters capable of carrying a lineup that otherwise lacks the thump Tampa Bay brings to the plate.
Junior Caminero’s 42 home runs are tied with Yordan Alvarez for second-most in the American League this season.
That kind of power, paired with a bullpen that has been excellent in high-leverage spots all October, gives Tampa Bay multiple ways to beat you. Cleveland’s path is narrower — lean on Ramírez and Kwan, get length from Griffin, and hope the pitching staff that set a postseason record with 21 strikeouts in a nine-inning game against Chicago can replicate that kind of dominance against a far more disciplined Rays lineup.
Shane McClanahan won’t factor into this series at all; Tampa Bay announced the left-hander is done for the rest of the postseason with a forearm issue. It barely dents their rotation depth given how well Rasmussen, and the arms behind him, have pitched.
Prediction and Best Bet
Cleveland has already proven it doesn’t scare easily, but asking a reshuffled rotation to beat the AL’s best record on the road, with a pitcher who wasn’t guaranteed a postseason start a week ago, is a tall order in Game 1. Look for Tampa Bay’s lineup depth to wear down Griffin by the middle innings while Rasmussen keeps Cleveland’s bats quiet into the sixth or seventh.
The pick:
- Prediction: Tampa Bay Rays 5, Cleveland Guardians 2
- Best Bet: Rays -1.5
Fade the rest narrative — Rasmussen’s form and Tampa Bay’s top-of-the-order production are too much to overcome in the series opener.
