Washington has won three straight and is locking up the No. 3 seed, but Chicago just beat this same Mystics group nine days ago — so this “meaningless” regular-season finale carries more tension than the standings let on.
Quick take:
- Pick: Washington Mystics -11.5
- Why: Washington is deeper, healthier, and locked in, while Chicago is playing out the string with five rotation players sidelined
- The number to watch: Kamilla Cardoso’s 55.2% field-goal clip — the one true individual advantage the Sky bring into Capital One Arena
Chicago (16-27) closes its season on the road with almost nothing to play for beyond pride and lottery positioning, while Washington (27-16) is trying to keep its foot on the gas heading into the postseason. The Mystics enter having won three in a row, including a 110-80 demolition of these same Sky on September 17 in Chicago. That result alone tells most of the story here.
Still, road splits and second-meeting dynamics matter, and Chicago has shown flashes of competitiveness even in a lost season — a four-game winning-adjacent stretch aside, the Sky have been the league’s most short-handed roster down the stretch, and Thursday won’t be any different.
Washington’s Market Confidence Says It All
Sportsbooks have priced this about as lopsided as a WNBA game gets. Washington opened around -11.5 on the spread and has held that number firm, with moneyline prices as steep as -600 to -900 depending on the book, while Chicago sits anywhere from +475 to +570. The total has settled in the 167.5 range, suggesting oddsmakers expect a competitive pace even if the final score isn’t competitive. That’s a market that has fully absorbed Chicago’s injury report and Washington’s current form, and it isn’t blinking. If you want to run the exact payout on either side, a quick trip through a betting calculator clears that up fast.

Chicago’s Depleted Roster Can’t Match Washington’s Frontcourt
Chicago is missing DiJonai Carrington (foot), Natasha Cloud (knee), Azura Stevens (knee), Skylar Diggins (out for the season) and Rickea Jackson (out for the season) — essentially half of last season’s rotation. That leaves Kamilla Cardoso, who’s quietly having a strong year at 14.6 points and 8.6 rebounds a game on 55.2% shooting, and Courtney Vandersloot running point at 9.3 points and 5.4 assists as the primary offensive engines for a team that has to piece together a lineup most nights right now.
Washington, by contrast, is rolling with its full complement of contributors. Kiki Iriafen has been the engine of this recent stretch, averaging 15.5 points and 9.6 rebounds on 51.8% shooting for the season, and she torched Chicago for 18 points and 11 boards in the September 17 meeting. Georgia Amoore was a game-time call earlier in the week with a knee issue but has been cleared to play, and with Sonia Citron already ruled out for personal reasons, the Mystics have simply absorbed the absence and kept winning — a sign of exactly how deep this roster has become.
Washington beat this same Sky team by 30 points a week and a half ago, with four different Mystics scoring in double figures.
That kind of margin doesn’t happen by accident. Washington’s defense ranks third in the league in defensive efficiency, and against a Chicago offense missing three of its top perimeter creators, that mismatch only gets worse in the rematch.
It won’t be a total mismatch on paper, though. Cardoso has been a load in the paint all year, and if she can force some second-chance points and keep Chicago competitive on the boards, this could stay under the number even as Washington controls the scoreboard.
Vandersloot’s playmaking is the other variable worth watching. She’s still distributing at a high level for a team that otherwise lacks perimeter shot creation, and if she can get Cardoso easy touches early, Chicago at least has a path to keeping the first quarter respectable. The problem is depth — once Washington starts rotating fresh bodies off its bench in the second and third quarters, Chicago simply doesn’t have the healthy pieces to match minute-for-minute, and that’s typically where these lopsided matchups blow open in the second half.
Prediction and Best Bet
Washington is playing its best basketball of the year at exactly the right time, and Chicago simply doesn’t have the healthy bodies to slow down a Mystics team that just dropped 110 on them. Expect Washington’s defense and depth to be the difference again.
The pick:
- Prediction: Washington Mystics 88, Chicago Sky 74
- Best Bet: Washington Mystics -11.5
The last meeting was a blowout for a reason, and nothing about Chicago’s health situation has changed since then. Shopping this line across a couple of books is worth it before tip-off — a DraftKings promo code can soften the number if you’re betting the favorite here — fade the Sky again.
