The Pirates showed some fight in a 10-inning loss to open this series, but Los Angeles trotting out a fully healthy Tarik Skubal against Pittsburgh’s shakiest member of the rotation is about as lopsided as a Saturday night matchup gets.

Quick take:

  • Pick: Dodgers -1.5
  • Why: Skubal’s stuff against a Pirates lineup that’s scuffled all series, with a shutdown Dodgers bullpen behind him
  • The number to watch: Jared Jones is allowing a 4.78 ERA on the road this season, and he’s about to face the best offense he’s seen all year

Pittsburgh dropped Friday’s opener 5-4 in extra innings and now sits 63-67, fourth in the NL Central and fading further from any realistic Wild Card push. The Dodgers, meanwhile, have won eight of their last nine and are riding one of the best records in the National League at 78-51. This is a get-right spot for LA against a team playing out the string in late August.

The Pirates are 16 to 17 games back in the division and their playoff hopes are essentially finished, which changes the entire complexion of a series like this. There’s no urgency behind Pittsburgh’s roster moves down the stretch, no reason to squeeze extra innings out of a taxed bullpen, and every incentive to let the kids get reps. Los Angeles is playing with the opposite mindset — every game in August still matters for playoff seeding, and manager Dave Roberts has shown all season he’ll lean on his best arms and bats even in games that look comfortable on paper.

Why the Line Keeps Climbing

Los Angeles opened as a heavy favorite and the number has only crept higher, with the Dodgers sitting anywhere from -225 to -240 on the moneyline depending on the book and the run line locked at -1.5. The total has settled around 7.5 to 8 runs, which tells you the market expects this Dodgers lineup to do damage against Jones even with Skubal dealing on the other side.

Skubal’s Stuff Meets a Lineup Running on Fumes

Tarik Skubal is making just his fourth start since Los Angeles landed him, and he’s still searching for the dominant outing that made him a two-time Cy Young winner in Detroit. He’s 7-7 with a 2.85 ERA on the season, and even a merely good version of Skubal is a nightmare matchup for a Pirates lineup that’s been feast-or-famine all month. Bryan Reynolds (.261/.370/.427, 15 HR) and Oneil Cruz (.266/.352/.480, 15 HR) are the two names capable of doing damage, but neither has been consistent enough to carry this offense against elite pitching.

On the other side, Jared Jones is 2-5 with a 4.78 ERA and gets a Dodgers lineup that just swept both the Rockies and the Royals in back-to-back series. Shohei Ohtani is still limited to DH duty as he continues rehabbing knee and biceps issues that have kept him off the mound since July 3 — he’s not expected back as a pitcher until September — but that hasn’t slowed his bat at all. He’s hitting .291 with 30 home runs and a .554 slugging percentage, and he’s not walking through that lineup unscathed for Pittsburgh’s staff.

Jones has a 4.78 ERA against a Dodgers offense that’s scored 18 runs combined in its last two series.

Freddie Freeman is hitting .303 and has been Ohtani’s steady complement all year — he took a scary tumble down the dugout stairs earlier this month chasing a foul ball but was fine, just sore, and has kept rolling since. Add in Max Muncy’s power (.251/.342/.497, 25 HR) and this is a top-to-bottom lineup that should feast on a struggling Jones. Pittsburgh’s bullpen has also been stretched thin after Friday’s extra-inning marathon, which only raises the ceiling on how many runs LA can put up if the starters get chased early.

Jones has shown flashes of the stuff that made him a top prospect, but consistency has been the issue all year, and road starts against elite lineups have been where it shows up most. Pittsburgh’s lineup can occasionally scratch out a run or two against good pitching, but Skubal’s fastball-slider combo is a different level from what they’ve seen most of this series. If Jones runs into trouble early, there’s little reason to think a taxed Pirates bullpen slows the bleeding — Friday’s extra-inning game already burned through several of their better relief arms.

For bettors tracking the full MLB odds board, this line has moved in Los Angeles’ favor since it opened, which usually signals sharp money agrees the Dodgers are undervalued even as heavy favorites. That kind of steam matters in a game where the pitching mismatch is this stark.

Prediction and Best Bet

Everything points toward Los Angeles controlling this one from the jump. Skubal doesn’t need a vintage outing to beat this Pittsburgh lineup, and the Dodgers’ bats have too much momentum for the Pirates staff to slow down two nights in a row. Pittsburgh isn’t hopeless — this roster has enough thump to make things interesting for a few innings — but the talent and motivation gaps both favor LA covering comfortably.

The pick:

  1. Prediction: Dodgers 6, Pirates 2
  2. Best Bet: Dodgers -1.5

Lay the run line here — Los Angeles has the pitching edge, the offensive edge, and the motivation of a team chasing playoff seeding against an opponent with nothing left to play for.
