A full Tuesday NHL slate means plenty of player props to sort through, and shots on goal are one of the friendliest markets for newer bettors. You do not need a hot goalie or a sniper on a heater. You just need a player who gets minutes, touches the puck and keeps sending it toward the net.
Tonight we are looking at three shots on goal props from three different games: a rookie winger in Pittsburgh, a young defenseman on the Flyers’ power play and one of the busiest blue-liners in the league in Columbus. Every pick comes with the reasoning behind it, so you can decide whether the number makes sense for you.
Trevor Connelly Over 1.5 Shots on Goal at Pittsburgh
Trevor Connelly (#24) has been a steady source of volume for the Vegas Golden Knights in his first NHL season. The 20-year-old left wing has 26 shots on goal through 15 games, about 1.7 per night, and he put two on net against these same Penguins in Vegas’ 6-2 win on October 17. A line of 1.5 sits just under that average, which is where you want a prop to be when the game environment is favorable.
Vegas visits Pittsburgh as a slight favorite at -112 with the total set at 6.5, a number that points to goals at both ends. More goals usually means more shots, and an open game suits a winger who plays with pace. Carter Hart is projected in net for the Golden Knights, and Sergei Murashov is the expected starter for the Penguins.
This is the thinnest edge of the three, and it is only fair to say so. Connelly had one shot in Monday’s loss at Boston and two against New Jersey on Friday, so he is not coming in red-hot. The case for the over is his role, his shot volume and a high-event game script. The over is around -135 at DraftKings, so check your book before you bet.
Oliver Bonk Over 1.5 Shots on Goal Against Minnesota
Oliver Bonk (#59) is a 21-year-old defenseman who has carved out a spot in Philadelphia. He has 12 shots on goal through 10 appearances and scored a goal on two shots in the Flyers’ 6-3 win on Sunday. Before that, he had two shots on both October 27 and October 24, so reaching two is well within his range.
He has slipped to a bottom-four role since Cam York returned from injury, which trims his even-strength minutes. The key detail is that he still plays on the power play, and power-play time is where defensemen pick up extra shots from the point. Minnesota arrives as a -170 road favorite with the total at 5.5, so the Flyers may spend stretches chasing the game, which tends to push defensemen into the attack.
This is a situation bet, not a lock. His season average is a little above one shot per game, so he needs some help from the game flow. At about -110 at DraftKings it is a fair price for a player who has hit two shots in recent games. If your book has it at a worse price, it is fine to pass.
Zach Werenski Over 2.5 Shots on Goal Against Colorado
Zach Werenski (#8) is the easiest one to explain. He plays around 28 minutes a night, and a big chunk of that comes on the power play. In his last 12 games he has taken three or more shots eight times, including nine against Toronto on October 20 and four at Dallas on Saturday. When he falls short, it is usually a quiet night where he took just one.
Columbus hosts Colorado, with the Avalanche around -135 on the road and the total at 6.5. A fast, high-scoring matchup is a good setup for a defenseman who shoots from the point as often as Werenski does, and if the Blue Jackets end up chasing the game, he will see even more of the puck.
One thing for newer bettors: this prop carries a steeper price, about -170 at DraftKings, because oddsmakers know he shoots a lot. You are paying for a higher chance of cashing. Our model puts it around 66%. If you want to see how a price like that translates into a win probability, the betting calculator does the math for any odds.
Today’s Edge
Shots on goal props reward players who get steady minutes and see the puck often. Werenski is the most reliable of the group, Connelly is the volume play with a slim edge and Bonk is the situational swing. Lines move once lineups are confirmed, so check your book for the final numbers. If you are still choosing where to bet, the DraftKings promo code page walks through the current welcome offer.
