Lions +4.5 over Panthers (DraftKings)
Detroit is 1-1 in the preseason after falling to the Jags last week 25-7. Neither Nate Sudfeld nor Teddy Bridgewater was able to get the offense going. They combined for a miserable 14-29 for 114 yards.
Sudfeld at least picked up a touchdown but also tossed an interception. The defense was not much better as they allowed nearly 400 yards of total offense to a Jags team led by CJ Beathard and Nathan Rourke. Even Tank Bigsby had a solid day on the ground as he ran for 70 yards on 13 carries against the Lions’ defense.
After being shut out 27-0 in their opener, the Panthers put up a much better fight against the Giants on the road last week. Despite being down 21-6 entering the 4th quarter, the Panthers showed some resolve as they were able to cut the lead to just 21-19.
Rookie Bryce Young did not look very special in his limited time on the field. Backup Matt Corral was decent and finished 9-13. Chuba Hubbard was good on the ground and racked up 30 yards on 8 carries while Raheem Blackshear did the same but added a touchdown. They held the Giants to just 60 yards on the ground but gave up 230 through the air.
Goff and the 1st team should see some time in this final preseason tune-up. However, even without him, we believe the Panthers just simply will find a way to lose this game and at the least, not cover the number. Bryce Young has looked like a deer in headlights at times and Matt Corral has the inconsistency that could lead to some short fields for the Lions.
Chargers @ 49ers Over 37.5 (BetMGM)
After putting up 34 points and defeating the Rams by 17 in their 1st preseason game, the Chargers were brought back to Earth by the Saints and lost last week 22-17. Easton Stick played the entire game under center and was mediocre at best.
He completed just over 50% of his passes for 233 yards, 2 picks, and was sacked 5 times. He did do a decent job with his legs as he led the team in rushing with 63 yards and 2 scores. The Saints QBs were able to throw for almost 300 yards and avoided turning the ball over.
The Niners bounced back nicely after losing to the Raiders and picked up a 21-20 win over the visiting Broncos. It was nice to see Trey Lance back in action and leading the Niners down the stretch. Down 20-12 with under 6 minutes to play, Lance hit Cameron Latu for a score to cut the deficit to 2.
And, after a quick 3 and out, Lance took them from their own 22 to the Broncos 14 in under 2 minutes to set up the game-winning Jake Moody field goal. Lance, along with Sam Darnold and Brock Purdy all looked good during their limited playing time.
With the Niners announcing that Purdy has solidified himself as the starter, we expect Trey Lance to make the most of his last opportunity at maximum playing time in this matchup.
Herbert and Duggan may see time after the way Easton Stick looked last game which could lead to a boost in their scoring. The 7.5 that the Niners will be laying here is a bit too much for us so we are riding the over in this one.
