Is betting on sports online legal?

If you live in a state where DraftKings or FanDuel sportsbooks are legal, they are indeed the best places to bet on sports online. If you’re unsure if betting with DraftKings or FanDuel is legal in your state know that their platforms have a fail-safe.

For example, if you pull up the DraftKings or FanDuel sportsbook and try to place a bet in a state where it hasn’t yet been legalized, you won’t be able to place said bet. (This is due to the advanced tracking system used to verify your IP address.)

If you’re one of the many people who live in a state where sports betting has yet to roll-out online, you’re options are offshore sportsbooks. In terms of offshore sportsbooks, we’ve had the best luck with Bovada.

Once a black-market or underground scene, betting on sports in the United States is undergoing a dramatic shift. It’s not happening near as fast as most of us want it to be, but it’s indeed happening on a state by state basis.

The biggest problem that sports betting websites and or service providers are having in rolling out their platforms across the US is the myriad of hurdles being brought fourth by States and localities themselves. If you aren’t already aware, the Federal government has already ruled on sports betting, sending the option to individual states.

Currently, 10 states have legalized sports betting (in various forms) and they are as followed:

  • New Jersey
  • Nevada
  • Delaware
  • Mississippi
  • West Virginia
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • Arkansas
  • New York

While we’re seeing great positive movement towards sports betting across the nation, the next biggest hurdle is going to present itself by way of market entry. More specifically, it’s one thing to legalize sports betting in any state, it’s another thing to allow competition via a fair cost to enter the marketplace.

In other words, we’re indeed seeing legalization of sports betting but in most cases the businesses allowed to offer sports betting have had to jump through all kinds of hoops and huge amounts of fees in order to operate.

Over time, the ideal situation will be clear and fair pricing to enter the sports betting market while proper regulations are in place. This limits the chances of monopolization by cultivating competition all while protecting individual bettors.
