Fantasy QB Rankings for 2022

2022 QB Draft Strategy

Normally with the QB position, we take a wait-and-see approach and 2022 is no different. There are so many talented signal-callers in the NFL now, which makes the position one of the deepest on the board.

Aside from being deep, there just isn’t much dropoff from #1 to #10 at the QB position. Josh Allen was the top fantasy QB last season averaging 33.5 FPPG. The number 10 QB was Jalen Hurts, who averaged 24.1 FPPG in his first full season as a starting QB. That is a difference of only 9.4 FPPG.

That just goes to show that, although Allen and Mahomes are a fantasy owner’s dream, you can still produce a winning fantasy team without either of them. Even a serviceable veteran like Derek Carr still would have netted you 18.8 FPPG last season! Needless to say, don’t overpay for a QB in 2022.

Veteran QB’s Going Undrafted in 2022

Though we’re not quite sure where they’ll end up, don’t be shy about taking a flyer on a guy like Jimmy Garoppolo or Baker Mayfield. Garoppolo is a steady option who had to undergo lots of criticism last year, even though he threw for 3,810 yards and 20 touchdowns. If Jimmy G lands on the right team, he could put up some decent fantasy numbers in 2022.

Mayfield had a subpar season, but he played almost the whole season with nagging injuries. With Deshaun Watson now in Cleveland, Mayfield will almost certainly be traded. A change of scenery might be just what Mayfield needs to have a breakout year!

The point here? Don’t write off a guy just because of one lackluster season!

What Quarterbacks To Target and Where to Draft Them

So, let’s shake things up and come up with a draft strategy. For the sake of this argument, we are going with a standard 12-team league with 18 roster slots. You need to draft two quarterbacks.

First, we recommend waiting until later in the draft to select a steady QB. Some of our favorite names to target here include Ryan Tannehill (current ADP 88), Joe Burrow (current ADP 109), and Trey Lance (current ADP 119).

We’d be happy to take any of those three guys, so it just depends on how risky you want to play it. If you want a dependable veteran, Tannehill should be your go-to. If you want an unproven young player with a ton of upside, Lance may be your best bet!

For our second QB, let’s try to draft a player who has the potential for a breakout season. So, if we go with Burrow as our first QB, we would be looking to add another QB behind him in rounds 10-12. Some names to consider here are Trevor Lawrence (current ADP 125), Tua Tagovailoa (current ADP 155), and Derek Carr (current ADP 181).

We are particularly interested in Carr, who set a career-high last season with 4,804 passing yards. The former Fresno State star did throw 14 picks last season, but we can’t wait to see what he does with a stud like Davante Adams on his team! A weapon like that should improve Carr’s numbers tremendously.

Remember, you can always use your QB2 roster slot to add a position player and shift to a waiver-wire QB2 strategy. Quarterbacks like Davis Mills, Carson Wentz,  Jared Goff, Zach Wilson, and whoever the Carolina QB is could all be on the waiver wire and be viable plug-and-play options, especially if they happen to be playing against weak defensive teams.
